5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My 2010 Camry auto 4cyl with 22700 miles stalled out 4 times in 2 days
So my 2010 Camry with 22700 miles just stalled out around 4 times today and yesterday. Happened when i was at a red light twice and the other two times it stalled out while coasting down a hill and the other while driving about 10 mph. Also the check engine light flickered on for a brief second several times and it the rpm dropped real low and it felt like it was gonna stall again. While cruising on the freeway with cruise control it ran like a champ.
Also the transmission feels VERY herky jerky when driving and shifting at low speeds. Very annoying and almost embarrassing to be frank. At this low mileage i was expecting a much smoother ride , im wondering does anyone else's tranny shift herky jerky like this and are there any fixes or adjustments that can be made
This is my very first Toyota and honestly so far im unimpressed , I bought the car used with 22000 miles on it about a month ago ,but with the low millage i was expecting better performance hopefully these are minor kinks that can be addresed easily. I have a dealer apt monday, luckily im still under the 36000 mile warranty, but as of right now i feel like my winter beater 2001 Olds Alero with 127000 miles drives and shifts more smoothly and is more reliable lol.
I know the stalling out can be fixed but is there anything that could be about the sloppy , jerky shifting of the transmission or is just the way the trannys were designed and nothing can be done.
sound like misfire, mileage still low so head to dealer. They'll tell u what's wrong too, and a rough estimate of how much it would cost if your mileage were higher.
depending on your vin #, theyll be able to apply one of the tsb's for rough shifting...i think it's between 15-30mph?
also, could you be a little more informative? did the check engine light "blink" every time before it stalled? when a check engine light blinks it usually is a misfire but could mean a lot of bad things are happening
i wouldn't consider this problem to be a minor kink... but hopefully it's an ecm issue..i can't imagine fuel injectors or spark plugs to be an issue this early
The check engine light did not blink it just flickered on for like half a second real quickly and then it went right back out..barely noticed it. . As that happened the rpm's shot down very low and then came back up without stalling. Defiantly something is up as it is not driving smoothly at all. Thank god i have over a year and 13000 miles left on my 36000 mile warranty. I will be dropping it off at the dealer tomorrow night. I wonder if this problem has anything to do with the jerky shifting.
Also the maint required light blinks for like 8 to ten seconds every time i start the car even if i put the car in drive it still blinks for a couple seconds but then goes right out and doesn't come back on. Is this standard for the maint required light to blink this long every time the car is started?

Yes, if it has been 45oo miles since the last oil change. It will eventually stay on and not go out when you hit 5k miles.

It's people like you that feed the fire for things like the accelerator peddle recall and such. He has a isolated random issue. There is no need to waste his time, or NHSTA's time. OP. Your car is under warranty so take it to the dealer. Sounds like it may be a vacuum leak or a misfire on all cylinders.

Seatbelt! you're piloting a vehicle were dual vvt-i hitts harder then VTEC and the torquesteer can possibly snap your wrists
ok, 2 separate issues, oil maint light will always blink every 4500 miles and stay solid at 5000 miles... now the "blinks quickly and goes away", you're intermittently misfiring and it seems to be an ecm issue
since its been a few days already, what has the tech at your dealership decided on?
If the dealer is unable or unwilling to correct the issue, that's the appropriate action. However, letting the dealer properly diagnose and repair the car would be a lot more productive and get the issue resolved.
As to the original fault - idle air controller being clogged, air intake tube being loose/disconnected, or even the TC lockup being bad are possible causes. Proper diagnosis and at least pulling the codes is the first step.
OK, so it's been 10 days now. What was the outcome at the dealer? I really like it when a problem is posted and possible reasons are given but there is no feedback from the original poster so that others may know the answer should they have the same problems in the future.
Sorry everyone about the late update, just have been super BUSY the past week ...anyways. So the dealer said the reason my car was stalling is because i have a habit of topping my gas tank all the way full and he said this is a no no because it will cause gas to get in a canister which causes the Camry to stall. Never had a problem with any previous vehicle i have owned but it's no big deal just have to keep in mind to not fill the gas tank all the way up to the rim. On the Invoice it says Canister assy. Change.
When i went inside the Toyota Tech who actually serviced my car said that when i hooked my amp wire up it caused the computer to reset and therefore caused low rpm's until the computer relearned and adjusted. So conflicting information on why it was stalling , the tech at the counter said it was because i was over filling my tank, and the tech inside said it's because i reset the computer when i hooked my amp wire up. the car has not stalled or low idled in about a week so apparently it has been fixed
They machined the rotors and the brakes stop nice and smooth now, he said since i do a lot of city stop and go driving this is what prematurely caused this.
Also about the transmission they reset something in he computer and he said within a couple of weeks the system should learn my driving behavior and shift more smoothly, i am already noticing better shifting after about a week.
Also they replaced a filter box which he said was causing the check engine light to come on.
Overall satisfied with Toyota's service, got my car in and out and now its running like new
