Upgrade to a V6.

Do a search there is a ton of threads on this topic.

There really is no performance mods unless you want to spend the $$$ i.e. Turbo... but then you might as well trade the car in for something else.

suspension and tires probably

a nice 19-23mm sway bar runs about 200-300 bucks, new tires 400
or lowering springs for about 110-200 bucks, they all change your handling nicely

The handling would go great with a more powerful engine like a V8 or turbo.

With an oem I4, u should stick with comfort. soft gentle cruising ride, maybe improve the audio so you can enjoy some music. Throw in a massage seat cover and maybe a mini cooler.

For over ten years I have been reading pleas from I4 Camry owners, asking the groups for help in boosting the engine performance. Did nobody ever take a test drive in these things? Free car in your case means it is what it is. Enjoy a family sedan until you can afford something faster.

For the few months that I've been on these boards, I've been reading replies that say, "Upgrade to a v6." This is easier said than done, of course. I'm under the impression that those of us with I4 Camrys didn't have the choice for a V6 at the time of purchase; I'm in this boat, and I would have gladly taken the V6 since more power makes me happy.

For the people who say "no" right off the bat, consider this. I don't think it's unrealistic to assume that there are aftermarket parts that fit the 2az-fe Camry. It shares an engine with the first generation Scion TC after all, which people have been building on for the last five years (give or take). 2az owners can purchase:

Turbo kits
Brian Crower performance camshafts
lightweight crank pulleys
high compression pistons
forged rods
CAIs
various exhaust headers, mid pipes, etc.
big bore throttle bodies (Mazda RX8 TB)
Brian Crower stroker kit
valves & springs
tuning

Just some food for thought. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has cross-referenced this engine to see what's out there.

What you say is very true. Most Camrys on the new lot are I4's. The selection of V6's is limited or nonexistent. The problem with the 2AZ engine in the Camry is that it is underpowered by about 50 hp. The engine is snappy in a lighter car. But again, it is underpowered by roughly a third, and there just isn't any fix for this short of a turbo, and this would cost more than buying a V6 out of the box, and would certainly void any factory warranties. The 2.5 litre engine and new transmission were an improvement and is noticeable when moving off from a dead stop, but still not enough power, and at times the V6 can be viewed as overkill. I've driven them both, and it's just my opinion.

I agree that the I4 is underpowered; I'm in a love-hate relationship with my Camry for that reason. Before anyone tries to refute my above post by saying, "It's not worth the money, etc." I'd like to mention that most naturally aspirated builds cost as much as forced induction (if not more). The point of my post was to prove that parts are available.

I've also read that the Camry's ECU is notoriously hard to crack, so tuning is difficult (compared to Hondas for example). Is this true? If so, can someone explain why?
