Gen5 2003 Camry XLE V6 Acting Up

I have a 2003 Camry XLE V6 (pre-VVTI) w/4-speed automatic (pre 5-speed). Have owned it since late fall 2010, bought it with 118,000 miles on it, now has 131,000 miles.

Just recently, I have noted a minor problem developing. It happens only after the engine is fully warmed up. No check engine light on, no pending codes either. It idles fine, drives fine. But, after a warm engine startup, when pulling away from a stop with very light throttle, there is a hesitation that is fairly noticeable. Give it a little more gas, and the acceleration is smooth. Also, when on the highway, drives great, except when the engine is lightly loaded (such as going down a slightly sloping hill). Then the hesitation presents itself again. On a steep decline, on a flat road, or anything uphill, everything is great. Doesn't make any difference if the climate control is on or off, headlights on or off, etc.

Anyone experience this before? If so, anyone know what might be the cause of the problem?

I put the scanner on while the engine was idling in the driveway, after it had been driven for a bit (I couldn't do a freeze frame because my scanner is at home but my PC is in California, so I can't link up). I'm not even sure it is an engine issue - could be transmission related, but not likely (transmission fluid is where it should be when hot and engine idling). Air temperature was 65 deg F. Here is what the scanner provided:

Fuel Sys 1: CL
Fuel Sys 2: CL
Calc Load (%): 12.9
ECT (deg F): 194
STFT B1 (%): 1.5
LTFT B1 (%): -5.4
STFT B2 (%): 0.0
LTFT B2 (%): 3.1
Eng RPM: 590
Veh Speed (MPH): 0
Spark Adv (deg): 20
IAT (deg F): 114
MAF (lb/min): 0.306
TPS (%): 15.2
O2S B1 S2 (V): 0.740
STFT B1 S2 (%): NA
O2S B2 S2 (V): 0.680
STFT B2 S2 (%): NA
OBD Sup: OBD2
O2S B1 S1 (V): 3.298
EQ Ratio 11: 1.000
O2S B2 S1 (V): 3.277
EQ Ratio 21: 1.000

The IAT is a bit high compared to ambient air temp, but the hood was closed and it had been idling for some time, so the IAT likely was picking up a lot of engine heat. On the highway when driving, the IAT went down to the high 70's (still about 10-15 deg F higher than ambient).

The ECT was also a bit high at 194 deg F, but when driving on the highway, it went down to 180 deg F.

The LTFT's for B1 & B2 seemed off compared to each other. When on the highway, these two values seemed pretty close. But when idling in the driveway, they kept pulling away from each other. Could this be a clue?

Anyway, if anyone has ever experienced this and knows what the source problem likely is, and what can be checked to verify the source of the problem, I would very much want your response.

Check out this thread. Rough running all speeds 2002 V6 LE 1MZ-FE

I had the same hesitation as you and working the plunger on the EGR position sensor fixed it.

I also went ahead and cleaned the throttle body, the MAF sensor and seafoamed the car. I did have to let the computer "learn" how to idle again after cleaning the components.

Thanks, Cookiebaggs. That link to a previous thread has my problem written all over it. When I get back to work on it over the July 4th holiday, I will give this a shot. Do you think the unplugging & replugging the electrical connector several times solved your problem, or do you think you had to remove the sensor and work the plunger several times to fix it? Or do you think your additional cleaning of the throttle body & MAF is what was required?

I can't really say for certain what it was that fixed it. Plugging & replugging the electrical connector several times and removing the sensor and working the plunger several times takes no time at all and it's free. If I were you, I'd try that first and see if it solves the problem. I just cleaned the TB and the MAF sensor for the hell of it. I figured it couldn't hurt.

I haven't had the hesitation problem in over a year now.
