5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Long story short I need someone who knows alot about toyotas
I have an 02 camry that I picked up for free that doesn't run I put a new valve cover gasket timing chain and a few small others and the car turns over but wont fire. I know that these motors are notorious for having blown head gaskets and bad head bolts thats what you get for buying japanese but anyway I was told by my guy to not put anymore money into it and to either junk it or buy a motor so my main question here is can I get a newer camry motor like and 06 or an 07 and put it in without having to change anything on the wiring harness and if I do have to change anything how much of a pain in the ass is it
You know what, I typed a whole explanation of how to cheaply drop a new motor with low miles, where to buy it and what parts you have to swap, but then I reread your post and realized that I'd be helping a tool who comes on a Toyota forum to trash Japanese cars and Camrys, and frankly you don't deserve to get what would become a $8000-$10,000 car for a grand and a half in repairs. So enjoy being clueless jerk like "your guy" apparently is about probably one of the easiest motors to work on out there.
Maybe next time you decide to ask people for help with a problem you don't start off by telling them that their cars are garbage. I mean, I know you're from Connecticut but that doesn't mean you have to act like the biggest douchenozzle in the world. Maybe learn to actually give a shit about the car you're trying to fix instead of just wanting to get it running so you can dump the "japanese garbage" and you might actually learn enough to realize how easy a car it is to work on and how cheap parts are.

GFY
That's funny stuff....I don't care who you are. The original poster probably doesn't realize that the Camry is the best selling car in the country, for good reason. I believe it's also American made, is it Indiana or Kentucky? Maybe he should listen to his guy, and possibly trade even for a "good" Chevy S-10.

There's a lot of people here willing to help you out if you don't bash the product so much
The Camry is an excellent car, very reliable, and in your generation, high quality inside and out. It would definitely be worth throwing in a newer motor-these cars are FAMOUS for running 300k+ easy.

Like Smokey Yunik used to say. You mix a little fuel with air in the right proportion and add a spark at the right time and you can't keep em from running. If you are accomplished enough to replace the timing chain, you can surely trouble shoot the problem,right?Fuel/air,ignition,timing=running.

Listen to all the people I offended I didnt mean to I never had a japanese car and I've never seen this problem before I understand why you would be mad and I apologize from what I hear about these motors though they have alot of problems and I don't know what to do I've put a few hundred at least into it and I don't know if its worth putting anymore into it I'm used to working on older cars and race mods not family cars with all these sensors and what not but yeah I truly apologize to all the toyota enthusiasts out there especially the guy who made the first response

...excepted.
you got for free car which in decent driving condition worth at least 5 grand.
spend some money, fix it and sell it.
if you need commuter car, you will not find anything better than camry.
and best part about camry, you always can find someone who willing to use it after you.

Yea I'm 100% sure I have alot of things I printed out and I bought the chiltons manual for the car I went today and looked for a motor and I got 2300 lowest price for one with 70,00 miles and I know theres a kit that ARP makes that is a stud kit that threads right into the head where the bolts currently are. I read in alot of different articles that these motors are notorious for head gaskets blowing and thats why they blow because the head bolts aren't long enough but the threads go all the way down to the bottom of the head. I don't know what I'm getting myself into with all of this I don't know if the threads in the head are stripped I don't know if thats the only problem either the car has over 200,000 miles on it I can't really afford much more I have a baby on the way and I work hard but I can't afford a car right now and I got this for free and I really don't know whats going on. The car turns over but it doesn't fire so I pored gas into the cylinders and same thing so its getting air and fuel but not spark. A buddy of mine did a compression test to it and blew air through all the cylinders and cylinders 2 and 3 both were blowing air straight out of them and I'm guessing its because the head gaskets blown and them bolts are bad and thats why they made the stud kit.
-Check compression. This will tell you if the valve timing is in the ballpark, if the rings are horrible, or if the head itself is loose.
-Pull a couple plugs to see if there is in fact spark.
-Finally, there must be fuel. Get a can of starter fluid and squirt a bit into the intake and then crank. You should get a few bangs from the starter fluid. If nothing happens using the starter fluid, then you have other problems. The engine will work if the timing is right, there is air, fuel, and compression. Simple physics and chemistry.

wow, you people are sensitive. i didn't take offense to the original post at all, i didn't see it as bashing at all.
i know it's hard to sense sarcasm on a thread, but sheesh. it's just a friggin' car, japanese, chinese, american, indian, mexican, swedish, who cares? it's not a religion.
