Car PC anyone???

Has anyone tried to put a car pc in? If so, what did you use? I'm trying to decide between aftermarket stereo, fake factory nav and carputer.

I've had mine for about 2 1/2 years now and i still haven't custom molded my monitor to the dash,LOL!!!One thing that you don't want to cheapen out on when building a carpc is the monitor.Get a transflective monitor so you can see what's on the screen even in direct sunlight. They go from $400 to $1000 depending on the size you want.A good site for all this is here:

Some call at a Carputer. I also thought about the laptop, but I know a lot of people around here who have had there windows busted out and their GPS stolen. If they will do that for a 90 dollar GPS, I know it would happen for a laptop. Sure I could just take it with me, but I don't really want to lug a laptop around the mall, wal-mart etc. I could just hide it in the car, but you can't hide the mount. Plus if you have a passenger in the front it gets in the way. That's why I was looking into the in-dash. I also saw some single din units that came with a portable touch pad (about the size of an ipad) that you can use with it. But with the one I linked previously I don't think it would be an issue to get an aftermarket pad and if it's running windows you can use RDP or VNC to control it all the same. Plus I think you can also hook it up and control it from the head rests and definately get it to display on the fold down visor screen units. There is just something that intrigues me about having a network inside your car. Then if you added a NAS you could have every DVD/CD with you at all times on the hard drives. Not to mention streaming internet radio and video. I was also thinking about coupling it with a remote start program so I could start it via internet/phone (the above unit has 3G as well as wifi) Sort of like they do with ON Star and the iPhone APP with some other cars.

Initially, I was thinking of getting the Erisin 8" nav unit from the lengthy ebay post. But in searching for one I stumbled across this one. It looks stock and has a more beefy atom processor and more ram. It's more expensive, but looks stock and has a lot of potential if the quality is there.

one question friends: why? lol. i already listen to pandora and youtube videos in the car with my pio double din (and my unlimited verizon data streaming). i can watch dvds and any pretty much any other format of videos on the go. why would you need a pc in the car. you're not going to be able to do stuff on the go because you're driving and the monitor will be too small to do anything useful with it...just my .02 cents.

For me, it will be for the upgradability and customization. For instance, I can throw Centrafuse gui on it or any other software that's available or may become available in the future. I'm not tied to what the manufacturer has installed. With usb ports, you can also add a variety of peripherals to suit your needs. There's internal storage for all of your media, not to mention the memory can be upgraded as needed. Also, the processor is more than likely more powerful.

And the main reason is.... because we can.

That's a lot of money for something on Ebay. I know it says it has a warranty, but I wouldn't look for it to be honored at least not without a lot of hassle. And if something happens you pay shipping to China and back again.

Yeah, that's the main reason I haven't pulled the trigger on this or the fake oem nav units. Up till now, the only thing I buy from china are cables.

I've had the erisin for 6 months now, and its much better than not having a nav/dvd system, but no where near the best model outthere. Its cheap and I've begun my quest for a carputer. Why a carputer? Well why do you have a computer in your home? You can install touchscreen drivers on windows 7 as well as simple car specific software like centrifuse that allow it to look like a nav system.

And most improtantly is this:
aftermarket headunit ~ 150
cheap erisinlike nav system ~ 350
top of the line nav system ~ 1000+

and here are my prelimineray plans for a carputer:
-ASUS AT5IONT (8 channel audio, usb 3.0, nividia video card (hdmi out) 165
- Modified 9.7 in ipad screen w/ lcd controller and inverter 200
- hard drive, cords, OS, housing ~200
Total_565

Now keep in mind i'll probably spend more because i'll want more. But if you got a more basic mini motheborad/cpu you can be under 100 and you can get a smaller screen for much less. Easily keeping an entire built sub 500. But for a price somwhere between erisin poop and pioneer nav, you can have a system with vastly superior sound, video, and computing power with an infinite amount of custamizable options.
I'll take a carputer thank you
