2005 SE GPS Question

I have recently bought a 2005 SE (V6, black on black leather) with the factory JBL GPS head unit. While I am enjoying the new ride, the GPS is awful. My main issues are that it is not intuitive, I have to tell the car that I "agree" to the safety disclaimer every time I start the car, and that a destination can't be entered while the car is in drive.

So here are the questions:
If I upgrade the map DVD, are any of the above issues resolved?
Is there any hack around the start-up disclaimer screen?

And if there is no way around any of these issues, what are some frequently chosen aftermarket GPS HUs that members have installed. Other than possible fit issues, does changing the HU have any impact on the car's ECU or other systems?

Thanks for any help.

this is standard on any in car gps units, manufacturers have to cover their ass for lawsuits.

nope, but you may be to get around the entering the destination while in drive by grounding a certain wire of the head unit. search around, there is probably a diy or instructions on how to do this.

there probably is, but it may not be free or easy to do. do you leave the radio in nav mode? on my nav radio that disclaimer only comes up if i leave it in nav mode. any other mode, the disclaimer will not show up.

there are many popular headunits, i myself have an older eclipse head unit. Fujitsu ten, who makes the oem headunits for toyota, also make the eclipse head units. i don't think eclipse are made any longer though. i would go for a newer head unit made by any of the bigger companies (kenwood, pioneer, etc) because a lot of the newer features are quite nifty.

changing the headunit should not have any impact on the other systems as long as it is installed properly.

I'm in the same boat. Always have to press the "I agree all the shit throw at me". No way around this.

And I used to able to go into the secret maintenance screen. There is an over ride in there that allows you to use all function while in motion. But everything go back to normal when the car turn off.

Steps to go into this secret screen:
1) Turn on the head unit (either start the car or go into accessory only)
2) Press Menu
3) Volume (don't touch anything else)
4) Here is the secret part .... press top left corner > press bottom left corner > top left again > bottom left again
5) If you done step 4 correctly and if there is a secret maintenance screen this is when it pop up. The graphic is not as nice as all the normal screen. All the buttons are flat.
6) Press and Hold one of those button read "Override" or something like that.
7) Hold till you hear a beep, let go and you see the button stay darken.
8) press "BACK" until you get to regular screen.
9) Now you can enjoy everything while in motion.

Now for the sad part, I did the map update........ now I can't get to this maintenance screen anymore. And what I was told, the grounding wire hack trick get waste too.

It's sad that the new "Upgrade" are actually "downgrade" like Apple and all their........ well....

Goodluck and live long and .........

I also have an Eclipse unit in my XTerra (AVN2210p with the removable TomTom, I think this model was even an option in the 4Runner a few years back), and do like it. But I agree about not knowing if they are available anymore, Crutchfield use to retail them but it doesn't look like they do anymore and the Eclipse site doesn't make it easy to find local dealers.

So I guess it leaves me to find an aftermarket HU that fits my needs better.
