What is the Black Box on the Line to Engine Air Filter?

Hi,

I was just wondering what this black box was and does on the air intake hose line to the engine air filter box. Here's a picture.

Cheers,

That is a silencer if I am not mistaken, although I have covered the hole inside that leads to the box, and even taken the whole thing off. Doesn't make enough of a difference, so I left it factory.

QFT. Leave it like it is, or spend some money and get a proper intake. I had the K&N Typhoon on mine for a while but it became annoying. Back to stock, fine by me.

Looking at the link in the OP's second post reminded me of my own '95. It had two silencers- one on the intake tube, and the other (F'n huge) in the driver-side wheelwell. Took them off and the thing roared over 3000 RPM.

I'm going to take a chance of irritating some people here so here goes: I leave all the factory inlet and exhaust on my '11 4 cyl. Camry. the I4 engine has the advantage of low cost, light weight and good gas mileage but I don't want to listen to the nasty noise they make. If you want to hear a good sounding I4, listen to an old 4.0L Offenhauser racing engine with a big open header roaring wide open through 7,000rpm heading for 8,000 revs. That's right, 1,000cc per cylinder. What a sound!
