5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I am curious to know if the windows filter UV rays as I heard or read somewhere that the side windows are not UV filtered but the front windshield is. Is this true? If not, is there a clear film/light tint that can be applied to the windows to help protect against UV rays? My skin and interior needs protection from the sun.
For this one you should spend the time to write or phone Toyota corporate and ask them. They can give you a definitive answer where here it is largely speculation.

HSEA (High Solar Energy-Absorbing) glass is standard on the 2011 Camry, which means windshield and windows. It will reduce but not completely block UV rays.
if you want the best protection, i would also tint the windows. Most modern tints have UV blocking properties, so you would benefit from largely any tint you choose.

I do plan on tinting but I can't tint the windshield or front windows in CA. I had tint on my last Camry and got pegged. Had to take it off which was a pain in the a**.

Really??? CA won't let you tint the front windows at all? I can't even imagine having untinted windows here in Texas.
my se came with a light polarized tint and it cuts out alot of heat and uv rays.i believe the lexus models come with the same.if you can see almost waves in the glass i believe it does

If you go with a light enough tint in the front then your chances of getting pulled over for it are slim.

According to Toyota manual for 2007, all windows cut UV by 90%. Windshield is 100% UV reduction.
If you want ultimate UV and IR cut without reduction in visible light transmission, ceramic films are the way to go, but they are expensive. It might cost $600 to tint an entire vehicle, but something like 70% 3M Crystaline film will have the same heat rejection as a 20% 3M CS. Expect to pay about $250 for 3M CS all around.
Keep in mind that 3M makes many lines of film at different price levels. If you only intend to keep the car for a few years, a dyed film will be fine because it will fade in 3 or 5 years. If you intend to keep the car longer, it will be beneficial to pay more for film that is guaranteed against fading such as 3M Colorstable or similar.
Just because the shop says they use 3M doesn't mean it won't fade. Almost every film has delamination or bubbling warranty, but few warranty against fading also.
There are other quality films out there besides 3M such as Llumar.
If you do a quick Google search - Calif. tint laws - you'll find that, as goofy as CA is on a lot of things, their tint laws are fairly consistent with the laws in other states. Yes you can tint your front windows and there is no tint restriction on the rear windows -etc.

On Camry, the windows are already tinted to 70% VLT so no additional tint film should be applied to the glass if one wishes to remain legal.
I'm in the OC area and frequently visit SD & LA.
I have 5%R/15%F
I've gone through check points, pulled over, etc... and cops have never said anything
As for windshield, they sell clear "tint" that just serves as a uv filter, pretty sweet.

When I got pulled over in my 05 Camry it was because of tint and nothing else. He didn't even ask about anything else.
I also spend a lot of time travelling to OC area as I have family down there. I do notice quite a few more cars there have front window tint then here in the bay area. They probably let it go more due to higher temperatures and more days of sunlight.
When I lived there a while back I had tinted windows and got pulled over for a speeding ticket once but he never mentioned anything about the tint either.
maybe I'll just do 50% and take my chances again. The main reason I want the front done is for UV protection and heat reduction.
