5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Long story short, I was planning to trade the Camry in. Just got bored and frustrated with it. Now very happily engaged, and on the verge of moving in with my fiancee, the Camry is here to stay.
I took off my K&N Typhoon to return the car to stock, and I'm noticing a 1-2 mpg drop in my fuel economy. I normally fill up at the same station so that rules out pumps shutting off early, and my driving habits haven't changed.
Anyone have a similar experience? Contemplating putting the intake back on since I'm keeping the car at least through winter.

Generally most cars aren't as efficient as they can be from the factory. Companies usually restrict the intakes and exhausts for the sake of comfort and quietness. Installing your K&N took the intake resonator out and allowed more air into the engine making the ecu re-calibrate, more than likely, to put less fuel in. I've seen this happen on many cars and trucks alike. Because of aftermarket parts and conservative driving my buddy was able to get 30.4 instantaneous MPG on the highway at 60MPH in a '05 Silverado, and Chevy didn't start putting active cylinder management on those trucks until '07 so all 8cyl were being used.

I noticed a 1-2 mpg increase after intake/exhaust on my drive to work each day, and it's the same route and I fill up at the same station so that seems to match up to my experience. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

And I'm sure Mom felt the same way when you were my age.
(yes, that's my dad)
Had my 77 Cutlass S when I was your age. Did a shitload of work to that one. Swapped engines, trans, rear and gears. Plus of course a cam change, intake, headers, duals, shift kit, reworked distributor and my custom carb work. Not to mention the Lemans police pursuit suspension rebuild. So, yea, I guess mom did feel the same way. Kept me out of trouble though. All that work to run about as fast as my V6 Camry does now.
