Gen6 JBL Amp issues

Ok, Here's my story. I have a 2007 Camry SE, LOVE IT. I have the JBL system in it and I was happy as a clam. Long story, but the JBL amp shorted and is now dead (the head unit and the speakers are fine). I can get one from a junk yard for $300. I've read some of the forum threads, but none of them really answered my question without actually commenting on them. If I would have done so it would have been pretty off topic.

1) Can I just get an aftermarket head unit (there are some lengthy threads on the head units that cost 300-500 that have DVD and GPS capability) instead of replacing the amp, or would I still have to replace the JBL amp?

2) Spending between 300-500 would I be able to have a functioning audio system that would be better than what I currently have?

3) Is there an option c?

These are my thoughts: If I have to spend $300 on my audio I might as well get as much value for my money as I can. I am open to all sorts of ideas. The silence in my car is killing me and I need to make a decision!

I thank you in advance

If I am understanding you correctly, just your amp is bad, if that is so you can pick a new one up on ebay for a lot less than $300, I have seen them from $75-150 shipped. If you bypass the amp with an aftermarket radio, no, it won't be up to par with what came factory. If you invest a bit more you can get it to sound better but you're going to exceed the $3-500 range as well.

Looks like you should be able to replace the stereo and bypass the Jbl amp. Although that may involve running separate speaker wires. Looks like you're looking at one of those Ebay units. From what I've read, the sound quality is only marginally better than a stock non-Jbl system. Having Nav, bluetooth and all those functions would be nice though.
