Hello folks...

My car has been getting hard to start in the morning and I suspect the coils.
I did a little research online and found a pinout for the coil.
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/855/9008019023ignitioncoil.jpg/

Two of the coils measure 348 ohms from gnd to trigger and 22300 ohms from gnd to +12v (no I did not measure with power applied )

The other two have the same gnd to trigger reading but the values for gnd to +12v is 20800 and 25750.

Does anyone here have the actual readings for these and can someone tell me if these two coils being weak could cause bad starting in the morning?

Extra info... the Camry is a 2002 with 204000 km on it. I changed the air filter only so far as it was quite dirty. I did not remove the spark plugs yet because I was leaning towards bad coils.

I appreciate any help or advice

Tim

I don't have a definitive answer for you but I can only make an educatd guess. If the impedances between ground and trigger are all consistent, and the difference between ground and +12 volts is at worst 15% between high and median, then unless you have multiple coil failures, I don't think that this is the problem.

Hi gdanaher and thanks for your reply.
The reason I was leaning towards the coils is because I had an Oldsmobile a number of years ago that had a strange three-in-one coil pack that had a similar problem. two of the coils were the same and the third was off only slightly and it turned out to be the problem.

It MIGHT be the problem, but perhaps I'm not understanding the issue. If it will crank and fire but run with a misfiring cylinder, then I lean to the coil as well. Since the 4 coils are independent of each other, if none of them fire, then the problem is more likely up stream from them. Look for loose or dirty wiring connections. Try to segregate the ignition from the fuel variables. It might also be a fuel delivery issue.

Cranks fine - all coils fire and there are no misfires. There is simply engine stumble (the engine seems to be starving for something) for about three seconds when I start it in the morning. The cooler it is in the morning, the more it stumbles. It only does it when the engine has not been running for more than 12 hours. I appreciate your input on the matter
