Good price for replacing the engine?

Last week we think the plug on the oil pan fell out while my wife was driving and all the oil leaked out. Ultimately the engine seized and we now need a new one.

Here's what the shop is quoting:

$1850 (100,000 miles)
$2000 (88,000 miles)

Plus ~$800 for labor. Includes a 1-year warranty.

So with tax we're looking at around $3000.

We've got a 2002 Camry that, otherwise, is in good condition.

The cost for the engine seems a bit high, but is that pretty normal for a Camry engine?

^doesn't seem TOO crazy, but I just found this on ebay---- you'll retain all the original accessories, which is good because you don't have to pay for new ones with the new motor..

or this one, complete, is even more than what you were quoted..

GL w/ it!

$3k is b ad at all for such a job, but who last changed the oil, and how deep are their pockets? If it's a Jiffy place, they need to be the ones to write a check.

How many miles on this car? Were ther replacement engines available from the same year? Hopefully, yes.

Oil pan drain plugs don't fall out when torqued to the factory spec. I have been changing my own oil for fifty some years and never had a plug fall out or even loosen. Who changed the oil last? If it was you,you have learned a very costly lesson that you won't ever forget.Work on your car like you would work on an airplane that you will have to fly on.

800 for labor seems legit as the break down of it is ~8hr of labor time.

1800 for 4cyl 100k seems legit, assuming that's including the markup. or you go find a motor and save yourself couple tens % of markup.
