Camry 2009 60K Service

Hi

I have been quoted $500 for 60K service by my local Toyota Dealer.

My question - is this reasonable and what to expect in the 60K Service. Should I go to a local mechanic?

Thanks
RJ

No, that is about the going rate at a dealer. 60k is a big service for a car.

are these services important? I do oil changes and rotate tires myself every 6 months, and clean/replace air filter once in a while (the first one I did was 20k miles). My car is now 30K, and it runs great. So are these services worth it?

Well they recommend you think about doing the timing belt at between 60k and 80k. If you have the availability to do it your own; find out exactly what they do service by service, then see if you can do it on your own.

I think with today's cars and the very extended service intervals on things like ATF, coolant and spark plugs it's just wrong for dealers to gouge by hiding behind the "30K", "60K' and "90K" intervals instead of charging only for the actual work performed.

Is the "lifetime" WS ATF going to be changed? No. Is the 10yr/100K mile coolant going be changed? No. And the 120K mile spark plugs ? No. So does it cost $500 for an oil change, tire rotation, filters, and a multi-point inspection you should get with every oil change? I say no.

My point is get a second opinion from a reputable independent garage. I'd make sure to replace the brake fluid, ATF filter/fluid and the coolant too if the car is a keeper. (There is no such thing as the "lifetime" fluid unless it's when the component failed then the fluid served its lifetime). The problem is making sure the fluids actually get replaced. In this trade often it's not even when the owner paid for it. It's already a problem with some mechanics not replacing the oil filter insert - the owner has no way of verifying unless doing own oil changes.

LOL... 60k? There is no 60K service for an 09, V6 or not.

Next service is transmission fluid, which I think is 80K or 100k. Coolant around same. And then Spark plugs at 120K. Nothing else needs to be serviced unless it's broken or worn - like brakes, aside from your usual 5000-10k oil changes.

You're correct from the standpoint of no major part or fluid changes. From Toyota:

my coolant was dead by 70K, but TX heat probably helped alot. as soon as I replaced it I felt difference.
I replaced plugs at 65K, maybe they good for 100K, but my electrodes looked pretty bad.
ATF was very dark at 70K. so I drain/refill it twice- to replace all fluid.
but again, TX ain't easy on cars in other states it might be not necessarily to do.

+100
do it yourself or find trusted mechanic.

if you want car in tip-top condition and no problems in future, do following:
if fluid dark or dirty-drain/refill tranny-$25-30- 30-40 min.
if coolant dark or dirty -replace it -$25-30- 1.5 hr-very easy, just takes time.
spark plugs NGK iridium $12 a pc? 15min. on I-4. way longer and more difficult on V-6.
check brakes-good pads $50-60 per set. 1hr of work top.
air filter-$10-3min.
throttle body service $5- 30 min.
oil/filter $25-40-30-40 min.
steering wheel and brake fluid should be good for another 50-60K.
but if they dirty or dark-replace them too.
