5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I own a 07 Camry SE 4 banger with just over 35k and this morning were chugging along to work, I'm driving in the left lane down a small 2 lane highway doing about 30 mph because its been raining like crazy (I'm usually flying 50-60mph here) I'm coming up on a slight rightward curve in the road. As I turn my wheel slightly right with no pull nothing my front end is in the right lane, I continue to skid at an angle for a few feet and soon I'm skidding sideways for a few feet. Thank god it was 6am not many cars on the road yet so once counter steering didn't work I'm just slamming the horn and the brakes abs kicks in and my rear end turns fast and is heading right towards the guardrail. Tires screaming I come.to a halt like 2 feet from the wall having done a complete 180. So now I'm facing the.wrong way on a highway on the shoulder but around a curve so oncoming traffic can't see me, I throw on my flashers throw her in reverse smash on the gas and nothing. Took me about 5 seconds to realize the car was off and another 5 to realize it wouldn't turn on out of park or neutral vso once I got a clear head I.was able to safely reverse and POP a u.turn on a off ramp before anything bad happened. Clearly the Camry gods were with me and me non traction control equipped Camry this morning but it leaves me wondering why the car cut off with no impact. I understand if there's impact it can be usefull but in my case if someone was coming towards me or if I wouldnt have been on.the shoulder having the car turn off and not reacting fast enough to realize she was off could of cost me dearly.
Once I let my gas go really low and on my way to the gas station there was a turn, during that turn my engine wanted to cut off. Might be the same with u. It happen only once but the engine didn't cut off.
I once went into the ditch in a Buick years ago, didn't hit anything, but spun a 180 at 45 mph and as soon as I came to a halt I saw the car was off. I'm not sure why, but it's happened to me before as well.

Thats what I was going to say..maybe a safety sensor caused the fuel to cut off when you did the 180? But one things for sure...God was paying extra attention to you today...that could've had a very different outcome. Glad you're still with us!
I'd be thinking about some new tires. Maybe like Michelin Hydro-Edge or something along those lines. Original tires on that SE?
Better to be safe than........oh sh!t!!!

The stock ones are awful. Go with Michelin. Those serve me well.
Absolutely...get a new set of Michelins..the stock Bridgestone Turanza's are as useful as a goat in a hailstorm. I swapped them out for a set of Michelin V rated Pilot Exalto's. Everything instantly improved from ride to especially handling. They perform very well in rain...I've yet to hydroplane on the interstate during the couple times I've got caught in a heavy downpour. When these wear out will probably buy another set. Not knocking ALL Bridgestone tires just those crappy OEM Turanza's.
Some Camrys get Michelin's stock, fyi. I myself have Turanzas and at 6000 miles, they will be gone by 15k easy.
I know, I had read about the OEM Bridgestones before buying my Car and tried to negotiate a swap for the Mickys from another Camry on the lot but alas before we closed couldn't quite get it done.
Don't go cheap on tires guys, I just replaced my GoodYear Eagle GT before it even hit the wear bar, costed me $400 for 2 (fronts only) cause rears are still good. I'd rather lose $400 or even 4 grand than losing control of my car because of bad tires.

Very true. Especially if you partake in "spirited" driving. AKA you disregard speed limits. I live in NH with awful winters, winding roads that twist and bank left and right, good tires will keep you safe and make your ride better.
