5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Most of you know I have a 2011 SE Camry with the 6 speed manual transmission.....well now the little things are beginning to bug me.
Annoyance 1: Grinds gears since the first cold day I drove it. Changed out the gear fluid, which helped, but it still does it. There are no other known fixes.
Annoyance 2: Rattles....rattles.....rattles. They don't really bother me anymore, I just turn up the radio
Annoyance 3: My rims are corroding. All 4 of them look like hell already.
Annoyance 4: The paint that's being used on cars now SUCKS. I have visible scratches everywhere all over the car that don't come out with rubbing compound, clay, waxes....anything. (I know clay doesn't really help but whatever) PLUS! I just saw yesterday that another jag off backed into my car and left a huge mark the size of a watermelon on my back bumper.
Oh, did I mention that my car has 6000 miles?

Take the wheels off get yourself a few cans of rim paint and repaint them! Thats what I would do or just get some new rims. Also get yourself some touch up paint and with the pen side fill in those scratches.

the only rattles i ever get is from the passenger seat belt when it is not properly retracted. are your noises coming from the suspension, maybe a bad strut, or like maybe the anti sway bar links, maybe even the brake calipers can be rattling, the exhaust maybe..?? can you have all the rubber bushings sprayed with silicone to eliminate where the rattling is coming from..??

you do live way up north, and i suspect they use that liquid de-icer on your roads, that wreaks havoc on all things, including literally "etching" our glass.
as i have the factory steel/w hubcaps, all i can suggest is a good thorough cleaning and look for a good wheel polish, like Mother's, but check the shelf at say Pep Boys for wheel polishes. there is a product called "Pig Snot" that works great for motorcycle rims, Pep Boys sells that as well.

yes, it's water based paints now, and have been for a number of years. there are "scratch removers" out there, again, Mother's scratch remover, Maguires, Eagle One, and some others...they do work, especially on black cars...
but i got the "beige" color car myself, and yeah, all the tiny chips that i have to touch up.
since you lease the car..??? you know you have to get it fixed (the watermelons) before you turn it in, or they will charge you..?? when time to turn it in, your choices would be either "maaco" or the dealer, if they can cut you a deal on the work.

I have already switched to Royal Purple, it's been in the car since about 2000 miles.
Also, the scratches/marks aren't horrendous enough as to where Toyota would charge me at the end of the lease. I work at the dealership I leased it from and trust me, the "employee price" is pretty much a joke, lol. My husband could do just as good of a job for almost nothing (he used to work in a body shop). I'm just annoyed that at 6000 miles, the car basically looks like hell. And I wash her 2-3 times a month, and she's been professionally detailed twice as well.
I've already pretty much decided to buy the car at the end of the lease...I like my manual cars and you can't really get them anymore. I'm just annoyed with the little things!!! haha

this is really funny....not that you are annoyed....but that you said, "Her", and "she"....
that's what's funny...as i have NEVER heard a woman referring to HER car THAT way....
it's always been a guy thing...to refer to our cars as "she", and "her"....and sometimes, "the old battle-ax"....lol....
Same comment I posted under your post in Geodesign's thread about your transmission:
I haven't done any major work on a car since they introduced computers and fuel injection and stuffed the engine compartment so full that you can't see the ground beneath the car; but; in an old car I would guess that the clutch isn't releasing all the way or the throw-out bearing is bad, or the syncro-gear is out of whack. I don't know if any of these things are in a modern transmission or not.
Gator-I've been doing some research on this issue and it seems that almost everyone who has this car in a northern climate has grinding problems, and no one down south does, which obviously makes me think it's temperature related, but it's still really odd. There was even a member here on TN who has had his entire transmission replaced, but it still grinds.

Only driven one Camry 6 speed and I noticed the grinding as well. Isn't it amazing I've been a salesman for years, sold hundreds and hundreds of cars, and not one manual toyota!! I suspect Toyota didn't put much thought into the Camry 6 speed since its .00000001% of the sales Also we have a black 2011 Camry XLE w/5500 miles and its quite scratched. Black paint is awful to begin with. My blizzard Avalon has no such issue...
^Black is awful! I didn't want it, but I wanted the manual, so I didn't have a choice I would have much rather had the Blue Ribbon Metallic or Barcelona Red Metallic colors, but I had to settle. I'll probably end up keeping the car....and then it will get a repaint in Black Metallic instead of straight black.
