Drained and refilled 4qt on my 02 Camry. Also changed the trans filter. It used to be all the way up to "HOT", but very low after refill. What's the trick here? Need another qt?
I suppose the filter would make a slight difference but don't think that would be a factor. How low is "low?"If the level is in the operating range I would watch it awhile before adding another quart. Regards

That low where the red mark is in the picture. Above the red mark is basically empty and not covered at all.
if you sure you checked level under proper conditions (warmed up engine after short drive, leveled surface) add another qt. or so, your level is way low.

the filter "holds back" some fluid...i'll bet that when you removed the filter, fluid came out..??
fill it up to the "cold line"....then drive the car for about a good 20 miles to get it hot...park the car, and check the level as per the instructions on the dipstick...some say, car idling, some say car off, etc,etc.....as the fluid gets hot, it will expand a bit. actually, this could be a good time to use some Royal Purple additive as well.

drain and refill is supposed to be ~4.7 qt on the I4 according to the owners manual... so yes you're nearly a quart low.

some say there's a proper way to check the transmission fluid and it's in the repair manual!
transmission fluid at operating temperature (hot), car ON and in PARK. Cycle through the gears with you foot on the brake pedal: P to L, and back up to P. Take the dipstick out, wipe it off, then put it all the way back in briefly. You should now have an accurate (somewhat) reading of the transmission fluid level.

my apologies, just checked the owner's manual and it's actually 3.7 qt.
so like glen8963 said, perhaps the filter held back some fluid, but I would check the transmission fluid the proper way before determining if you're low or not.

How difficult was it to drop the pan and change the filter? I am planning to get it done on mine but another post said one of the pan bolts is almost impossible to get to without lifting the engine. It's hidden?
And was the old filter a metal screen? or a some sort of fiber based one?. Just trying to figure out if it even needs to be changed?

i used to drop the pan and drain, and yes, many transmissions have a metal screen, instead of a "real" filter. you have at least 2 options, you can drop the pan and put in a real filter, or you can have the transmission flushed and filled..
personally, i like the flush and fill because this is done with the engine running and in doing so, you get out nearly 90% and "up to" 98% of all the fluid...where as just dropping the pan, you get what, maybe 25-30 % of the fluid..??? also, in doing the flush and fill, you get out as much material from the transmission clutches and bands, rather then they stay in the transmission, only to be moved around and left inside..flushing costs more money, but this is what i have been doing for many years now....
any repair shop that has the equipment, can do this.
The OP cipsaz,
can you tell me what you found when you dropped the pan in you 2002 camry? Was the filter a metal screen or a regular filter with some fiber based material?
And were the tranny pan bolts easy to get to. (I mean not hidden or obstructed by something)
The Aisin U-series transmissions should have felt filters. The older A-series use strainer screens.
The T-IV fluids should be changed 15-20K miles. WS fluids about 30-40K miles. With filters. Consider using Valvoline synthetic MaxLife for T-IV and WS applications.
So what does the 2002 Camry 4 cylinder have? Aisin U or a the older A one?
And can someone answer the question on the pan bolts if any of them are hidden and tough to get to without raising the motor or something?
I had to raise the motor. The trick was screwing back the trans pan. It was pain in the ass because some bolts wouldn't want to get in that easy and I had to unscrew a few times before everything got aligned correctly. Make sure you don't force and get all your screws in before tightening them up.
I used 1 more qt after all (total 5qt) and now shows up to "HOT" level on the dipstick. Seems like everything is fine.

It was some fiber based material. I bought the replacement from AutoZone and both looked pretty much identical.
A few bolts were kinda hidden. No problem unscrewing, but getting them back took some more time.
