5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hi Folks, I have a new 2011 Camry with an unusual noise. It "thumps" in the rear. Here's the deal. When I start off from a stop, the rear end squats and a split second later I hear a deep muffled "thump" that sounds like it comes from inside the trunk. It sounds uncannily like a 5 pound bag of sugar sliding around in the trunk. Does anyone else have this noise? Could it be the gas sloshing to the rear of the tank?
It doesn't do it every time. It doesn't do it when I am turning and starting off at the same time.
I have checked and padded the jack with bubble wrap. The spare tire is secure. There is nothing in the spare tire well that moves. There is nothing in the storage well to the driver's side. Everything is secure in the trunk. Any ideas? If it is normal, I won't worry about it. Being new to the car, my brain is wondering if it is suspension issues.
1) Sticking brake? (not likely) From a standing start, with the front wheels on pavement, rear on dirt. Accelerate, stop, Go back and look for a skid in the dirt/no treads, obvious.
2) Sloshing gas in the tank from a 3/4 or more full tank.... Very likely.... A known complaint...

The ABS brake test only occurs after you start the car, not after you have been driving awhile. Gas slosh most likely, check it on a full tank or a very low tank of gas.

Thank y'all for the input. It is definitely not the ABS test as it does it numerous times during a drive. It could be the gas sloshing, and that was my thought earlier. Is there any technical service bulletin on this? Any Toyota folks reading this site? Many thanks, Marc
More than likely it is the gas in the tank but you can try removing everything from the trunk to try and isolate the problem. Start with the trunk mats and spare tire cardboard support and jack/cardboard support, then the spare tire itself. In my case, I found that the spare tire cardboard support shifted a bit while driving causing some clunking noises so I added some high density foam along the outside edges where this piece would come in contact with the floor of the trunk.

Mine happens exactly at 3/4 of gas in the tank but I am used to it and its not very noticeable unless your radio is off. Solution---- keep your tank full
