Unhappy I need help guys...the installer fried my car!!

I took my car to an music shop to install my 8" Erisin head unit and viper 5901 remote starter. Everything was going smooth until he was installing the viper and started poking around testing if different thigs had electricity and waam! Smoke started spewing out from under the steering wheel. He immediately disconnected everything and starte looking for the problem and this is what we found.

I now have to go to Toyota parts center and buy the replacement part because my car wont turn on without it. So its a very essential part of my car.

Any suggestions? What might have caused it? Alternatives? Please help guys im vehicleless untill i get this fixed

Oh and btw im not paying for anything

Why are you going to the parts store and out of a ride? Your 'installer' screwed it up royally and is responsible for his own actions, which includes replacing the toasted parts, and renting a car for you in the mean time. If this was a shade treee job, well, this is what happens under the shade tree.

If he was using a powered test light (I do, as do most installers and technicians when possible) they can actually transfer current and ground signals through the probe. Problem is on newer cars, much of the electronics are more sensitive than they were years ago and that small current can fry delicate electronics. I know many of the jaguars and german cars can go upwards of thousands of dollars when probed with a test light, and many new airbag systems will go off as well. As the others said, its negligence on the installers part for not using a multimeter instead of a test probe to find wires. Or maybe he was using a meter and just got unlucky with either the incorrect wire, or arcing two pins on the board together with the probe.

I agree with above. He should be paying a car rental and full repair bills. I hope it is a legit service center and not fly by night. An just the fact he did that he should be paying someone else to fix it!

I'd make them pay for a Toyota dealer to replace and repair whatever was damaged.
Don't go back there to have anything done.

the general consensus is that the idiot that did the fried egg impersonation ought to be paying the ENTIRE BILL, up to and including the ORIGINAL work you hired him to do.... Let him learn a very VALUABLE LESSON, and that is, "if you use the wrong equipment and you destroy a car...you pay for it 100%, NOT the customer"......

that shop "should have" insurance....they will have to file a claim against it that they screwed up...if need be, get a lawyer.....that'll get them to take care of things....
