Kind of pissed right now: my '07 Camry is getting its engine rebuilt
I started noticing a few months ago that my car was burning oil and in between oil changes I was having to put oil in it. I thought maybe since the car is 5 years old and has over 80,000 mi it was burning oil because it was getting older. Well anyway on my last oil change I took it in to the dealer they said burning oil was not normal. So anyway they said they need to rebuild the engine! This really isn't something I feel should be nessicary on a 5 year old car especially at Toyota. Before I had this car I had a '90 Camry and the brake and fule lines rusted out and it need a new timing belt and water pump but had no engine issues. My dad has a 2000 Camry with over 120,000 mi on it and no engine issues. This making me wonder if all the stuff about Toyota losing their way is true.
There's always those few so lets hope it's an aberration. Sorry it happened to you though. I think I would be asking what the heck happened to cause it to need rebuilding so soon.
A little more explanation please. Are they honing the cylinders in the original block, installing a short block, or what? Hoping a factory short block was the choice.

They haven't given me all the details they said they had to replace the pistons, the guy told me he would be in touch to explain everything futher.
Highly unusual. 80K engines (by anybody) that have been maintained do not need rebuilding. Something is not right here.
Yes its very unusual, I do the oil changes regulary and everything. The funny thing is the same thing happend to my parents '95 windstar when it was about the same age and milage. The only good thing is mine was under warranty where as my parents had to take out a loan to get the engine replaced.
Having Toyota do this was your first mistake because it is going to cost you a shit ton. Second, how well has the engine been taken care of? My guess would be a broken valve spring(s) somewhere that is causing this issue.

Its only costing me 50 bucks, when I bought the car they threw in an extended warrenty for free. They also gave me a free rental car. And I have taken care of this car since the day I got it.
So why are you so pissed off??? You are getting a free engine rebuild. Jesus Christ man.
Becaus I don't expect this from a Toyota and it makes me question how long this car will hold up. If its getting a new engine at 5 yrs old its certainly not gonna last 15 or 20yrs like I would expect for a toyota. This is something I expect from GM or Ford. I bought this car because I expected it to last a long time and not have issues like this. Don't get me wrong its a blessing I don't have to pay for the engine but at the same time the engine should not be having these issues at 5 yrs old.

Can we trade lives? If this is your biggest problem, that you are getting a Toyota rebuild and costing you only $50.00. Wow!
Try half filling your glass, instead of having it half empty. Think of it this way, you just zeroed your engine again. New pistons is going to mean new rings new bearings, a honing of the cylinder walls. An I am sure much more. Its at least a full bottom rebuild. If your even luckier maybe the top end will get done to.
You are so lucky!!!
Congrats on an almost new engine!
Oh and if Toyota is doing this something must of let go, they don't do that kind of work for the heck of it. Don't worry about the engine must of just been some strange defect.

This is true. ^^^ What did you use for oil? How did you take care of it? None of this has been answered yet.
Good questions, but the dealer is covering it so that kind of answers that question I would think. Don't do proper servicing and try and get them to do a rebuild

Well, it is fallacious to assume that Toyota quality will remain at its pinnacle point of their heyday. One thing is for sure is that they don't build them like they used to. A lot of people have the same blind assumption as you do, and let me tell you if you do continue to think along those lines then you are in for a huge disappointment. I have had a few relatives that purchased new Toyotas that were livid over the huge recall ordeal.
There was a guy over in the new Corolla section that had his engine block crack.
