Replacing Intermediate Shaft

Hey,

My car is having a clicking feeling when turning the wheel. This feeling can be felt on the steering wheel as well as the brake. It is only coming when the car is stopped.

Toyota dealer says the intermediate shaft is binding and needs to be replaced. I have an extended platinum warranty on the car and the dealer says the warranty does not cover this.

Is this considered normal wear and tear? Dealer says it is 281 for parts and 450 for labor.

Thanks.

Have you read the paperwork on the extended warranty? It will explaine what is covered. There is a thread on this problem. Time and a little lube might correct the issue.

Second toyota dealer I took it to said they may be able to fix it with some lube. I was under the impression the coverage included steering parts as well. I would like to replace it under warranty if it is supposed to be covered.

Lube will only help a little. I had to replace mine right around 90k also. It's very easy to do.

I believe there were 3 bolts. The only thing you need to be careful with is aligning the steering wheel.

Ask the dealer to give you a printout of their parts list/procedure to replace the shaft.

The other Toyota dealer ended up greasing it which looks like fixed the issue. DOnt know if it will come back though...

Thank you for the information and keeping us up to date on this issue. I am having this exact issue around 65k miles. I thought the clicking was related to the Ultra Racing strut tower brace that I installed so I removed it but it only partially solved the problem.

I will try to lube the intermediate steering shaft thing you mentioned and see if that helps the situation. Hopefully this will allow me to put the strut brace back on.
