5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hi everybody. I have a 2009 Camry XLE 6CYL. I came from a 2005 Camry XLE 6CYL. The estimated gas mileage display is different than the 05 was I noticed, the '09 shoes estimated gas mileage to be way less than that of the '05. Here is my question. Im only averaging 17.7 MPG combined on the 09 (Actual calculation of milegae divided by how many gallons of gas)compared to 23 on the '05 Camry. Same driving habits. Does anyone else out there get crappy mileage on an '09 6CYL. Are there any service bulletins etc I need to know about? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Chuck
I have the same v6 as you on my 07 Camry. I get 28-32 when combining some city with highway driving to work and back... Trips I have yet to see how good I can get. Are you letting it shift around 1800-2000 RPMS? That is the sweet spot.
^Letting the auto shift gears. Are you stomping on the gas so it doesn't shift until 3-4000 rpms?
Anyway, I have a 6 speed manual 4 cyl. Camry SE (2011) that averages 25 mpg in summer and 19 mpg in winter. Pretty typical for these cars.
Another note-there are MANY, MANY threads on fuel economy for Gen 5 Camrys vs. Gen 6. It would be helpful to refer to them rather than starting a new thread on it.

So you have the car in drive... You step on the gas pedal and go. What RPMS is the car shifting at? If you are going 3-4k than you are probably right in that area...
I cant get more than 26 mpg I rarely go over3k rpms, 85 percent highway, tire pressure around 40, cruise control on the highway rarely going over 60mph and 26 is the best I can get. Car has 50k miles on it everything seems to be in great condition.
I was getting 37 consistently in my 08 corolla no problem I pushed beyond that multiple times. The Camry is huge though so i didn't expect those kinds of numbers but man 26mph driving like a grandma kinda sucks!
Okay, why 40 PSI? I run about 35, cold, and she seems to like it best there.
Another thing....are you in hilly terrain? Windy area? Someplace kinda chilly? Somewhere extremely hot? There are endless factors that affect gas mileage.

I have been messing with tire pressure. I want to drop it to around 35-38 its a bit rough at 40. I live in California, pretty mild climate a bit hot at times. Pretty much flat terrain there is a bit of wind on about 10 minuets of my drive but the rest is surrounded by mountains so its not bad. I have the same commute and driving style I had with my corolla and cant get any more than 26mpg lol
I have 40 PSI in my 18 TRD Rims. I recently bumped it from 30 up to 40 as pep boys lowered it to 30 without me telling them. I have not noticed any different from 35-40.. I am expecting when the temp drops my PSI will drop a few lbs right to 35 for the winter anyways. I do not know why you have such poor mileage... Besides basic tune up stuff and not having a lead foot you should be ok.
well higher PSI doesn't automatically increase the gas mileage..
well my camry call for 29 PSI, I put 34 PSI Cold.
Here is some info on my 2006 toyota camry v6.
PSI= 34
Tire Brand = BridgeStone Turanza Serenity
Engine Oil = Chevron Supreme 5w30
Gas= Chevron 87
Transmission Fluid = Toyota T-IV
60-65 mph @ RPM is 2000

I understand that. I never did say it did. What in the hell are you using Chevron oil for? I know I am a little bias here because where I live we have nothing that is chevron, but please put some reputable oil in that thing (mobil, pennzoil, quaker state, royal blue, amsoil, hell even supertech is better than that crap). My 2 cents.
