Canada abs light

Hi Everyone

I have a 2004 camry with the four.My ABS light is sometimes on other times not.Is there sensors in the wheels that might cause this?Do I have to deal with Toyota to fix this problem? My front brakes are about half way 50%.To get the code is there a after market code reader that I can purchase for garage use? Also my engine light is on.The problem started with engine light now this.Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You can get a chinese odbii reader, bluetooth version, for about 20-25 dollars, most come with software to run on your laptop. If you have an android phone you can get an app called Torque. Gives error codes and much more info. Hooks up to the android phone using bluetooth.

The ABS sensors at each axle are fairly protected but they can pick up debris in the small clearance between the rotor and the pick up. The front sensors unbolt but the ones on the rear are not easily accessible for the cars with rear disc brakes.I believe you have to unbolt the hub unit to gain access and then you need a puller to remove the sensor. The wiring and connectors should also be checked for damage. I take it the ABS light comes on while you are driving. The ABS system runs a diagnostic check every time you start and the light goes out if no problems are detected. I am not sure how the check engine light and the ABS light are connected but other members will probably have more information to help you. You could try checking your ABS system by finding a deserted parking lot and making a panic stop. I use my ABS in the winter months to determine traction. I'm sure you get a lot of ABS operation where you live. Beautiful part of the world to live. Regards

Abs light

Thanks everyone for the help.I forgot to mention, that before my ABS light stayed solid I was experiencing my ABS applying on dry conditions for no reason. At the time the light would only come on sometimes now i don't get the feel of my ABS applying but the ABS light stays solid.Anymore suggestions out there would be great.

Cheers and thanks again

Are all your tires the same diameter and are all tires inflated to the same psig? Also,I believe there are at least two fuses and a relay for the ABS system. You might look at your owners manual to find the right fuses and inspect each. The relay can be tested with a multimeter from Harbor Freight. The dealers have a test instrument for diagnosing ABS problems. I can remember thinking to myself that NASA would have to get involved with ABS problems when I read the first reports on how that system operates. Like I said before, find an empty parking lot or street and make an emergency stop from about 30 mph. If the ABS is working, you will hear it and feel the feed back pressure from the pump pulsating the brake pedal. My 2004 only has about 50,000 miles on it, but if the ABS system failed big time, I think I would just drive the car without that feature. It is a nice feature though and saved my bacon more than once driving roads in northwest Colorado.Regards

Abs light

Hi again

No I haven't resolve the problem yet.Check fuses they are all good.Applied brakes and no ABS working.Whats next you asked?Going to take car to a local shop and plug in and see whats up.More likely it going to be the sensors at the rear. Are the sensors expensive to buy?

Cheers
Huck
