Question Toyota Genuine ATF Type T-1V

Hello,

I wanted to change (diy flush) the transmission fluid in my 2003 Camry and need some info. The owners manual says to use "only" Toyota Genuine ATF Type T-1V.

1. Could I buy this fluid at a automotive store like Auto Zone? Is it the same tranny fluid that is sold at the Toyota dealership?

2. Regarding the transmission type ( T-1V) is it a #1 or a letter i after the dash?

Thanks for any info.

The ATF for your vehicle is T-lV[T-4]. Same thing as Mobil 3309. If fact,Mobil probably makes it. Regards

Word of the wise: do not do a tranny flush. Doing so may knock something out that is held by the sludge/deposits from the original fluid. Do a drain and refill instead and continue change the tranny oil with your engine oil.

P.S. The dealership sells T-IV for about $4-$6.

The type of flush I was thinking of doing to my 2003 Camry (minus the Lucas additive) was one I did on my 1989 Camry a long time ago with good results. It's a do it yourself type of flush using the transmissions own pump to remove the old fluid instead of using some high powered commercial flush machine. Click on the link below.

How often should I change transmission fluid?

Do You think it would be just as dangerous doing this "do it yourself" type of flush compared to a commercial flush machine? Thanks for the input.

The DIY is better than commercial flushing, but you have to be careful to not let run out pumping nothing. Also, doing it on a cold engine is better because you have to worry about the ATF burning off.

One of the reasons why I recommend against a full flush is the sludge that may be holding the transmission gears together will come off with parts of the tranny. Its better to change out the tranny slowly so the engine can get rid of the crap slowly instead of fully loosening all teh gunk.

I recommend drain/refill. I do it about every 20k miles. you can use mobil atf or toyota t-iv. I get toyota t-iv for $5/qt from amazon. Free Shipping.

get the engine to the normal temp.
use 10mm Hex Key to remove the drain plug.
It should came out about 3.7 qt.
refill about 3.7 qt through ATF Dip Stick.
you are done. take the old ATF to local recycle.

15-20K is good. Consider changing out the felt filter as well maybe every other ATF change.

Mobil-1 reformulated their ATF, so it's now only Dexron III type compatible. However, dino Mobil-3309 is still available, same bottle but different colors/labels than Toyota.

Or get the Valvoline MaxLife ATF. It's suitable for both T-IV and WS.
