5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I bought a CPO 2010 Camry LE (2.5 4 cyl, 6 sp auto) a few months ago. The car had around 34K miles when I got it, and ever since then, it has had a high pitched whining noise when accelerating or revving the engine in park. It is noticeable from around 2500RPM up, and seems to be a little louder when the engine is cold.
I have left it at the dealer twice, and both times they have come back and said it is normal. I can’t believe this, because I have owned many cars over the years, most of them being fairly dilapidated, yet most of them haven’t had a noise like this.
I think I have read a comment online somewhere that an issue like this was found due to a bad power steering pump .
Has anyone else experienced this? If so, and it has since been fixed, please share what the resolution to the issue was.
It took me a year to get a dealer to change mine out for the whine. My home dealer refused to do it. This other dealer changed it out and the whine is now less than half of the volume it was. I am happy now. Toyota changed the design for the GEN 6.5, to be more fuel efficient. The original pump was so loud it would drown out the radio at my normal volume level of 7 on my JBL system, intermittently. It was louder when cold and after driving at 60 mph, and short run at 35, stopping at an intersection then turning. The peak noise level was at 2100 to 2600 RPM. Another step in the wrong direction for Toyota as to the noise level...
Good luck at convincing a dealer to change it out...

Thanks. what you are describing sounds very similar to mine. I think I will try my luck at another dealer. Maybe if I can get the guy to come and ride with me in the car, he might agree that the noise is excessive. I personally find it really annoying, and unacceptable for a practically new car. Even my 10 year old Kia Rio never sounded like this....

The new pump still has some noise and is audible from the inside, but I do not have raise the radio volume any more...
The new pump design "SUCKS" meaning it is a cavitation issue......
