Rear Thud

I am getting a thud sound when the rear tires run over a bump no matter big or small. I removed the tire jack and it is still there. Could the sound be comming the rear struts or maybe the sway bar bushings? It seems to have gotten worse the last several months.

2003 Camry with 110,000 miles.

Your help is appreciated.
Thanks

Ron

Wow. I'm always amazed when a post doesn't get commented on.

This is dated to the post but I have had the same thing on my 05 LE with 157,000 on it. I thought my bump was from the tailpipe/muffler bumping the trailer hitch I put on. Last night I found the sway bar on the left rear is probably the culprit, fairly sloppy on the lower rubber. It's a "cute" kind of a small sway bar but that is the only thing making the noise. The left side is loose and noisey and the right is fairly tight.

On those Camrys the swaybar bushing are quite common. The easiest way to check is to get under the vehicle and grab the rear swaybar. If you can move it back and forth than the swaybar bushings are worn. The round opening of the swaybar has become eliptical due to wear.

That's what I found XKWISIT. The right one was tight the left one obviously sloppy. Do the long vertical bars that connect the sway bar up towards the strut go bad as well of just the bushings in the sway bar? I assume the bushings in the sway bar are an easy replacement from what it looked like.

They do wear also, but the noise sounds more like a rattle when you go over a rough road. Grab a hold of the swaybar link and try to move it up and down. The joint is a ball and socket, if you have play at the joint than the joint is worn and the link should be replaced.
