06 Solara problem: horn toots when cruise is engaged

Strange problem that just happened last evening. When I push the cruise button the horn toots and the panel cruise light comes on/off. However, the cruise contol will not work.
If I toot the horn, again the cruise panel light comes on/off as well.
The cruise control worked fine earlier that day.
Any ideas what this may be and where to start looking? My first thought is to disconnect the battery for a few hours and hopefully reset the computer.
Thanks.

well you can certainly try resetting the computer, just make sure you follow the suggestions on letting the car's computer "re-learn" itself. but i think you have an "inside issue" with the switch in the steering column. you might very well be looking at a big job, and if so, take it to a shop, you do not want to mess around in there.

Bizarre, I wonder if the computer is reading the inputs from the buttons wrong. Typically cars only have a few wires running up to a ring in the wheel, then they use multiplexing modules to give different values, those then are recieved ny another unit on the other end and then control said device. I wonder if the computer mistook a 5 for a 12 etc.

The disconnecting battery idea sounds best for now. I agree that tearing it apart probably wont get you too far...
