Click sound around the brake pedal

Camry 2004
43K original miles

This afternoon I was about to park the car in a parking lot and heard an odd sound from under the brake pedal. It sounded like a spring being stretched and whining. I didn't think much of it. Now if I apply the brake strong, I hear a click sound like a switch coming from right around the brake pedal area. The sound doesn't come up if I slowly apply the brake. And doesn't matter if the car is moving or parked. This sound is starting to annoy me a lot.

So I got under the dashboard and pushed the brake by hand. The sound seems to come from the area I circled in the image below.

Sorry the way I held my cell phone is bit awkward. I believe the problem is related to a spring but it seems the click comes from the rubber boot thingy covering the piston.

Is it a DIY project or I need to take the car to the shop?

Thanks

that is a sound heard by many. it is normal, and annoying. what i find it to be is the brake light switch. it is plastic, and from the constant usage of the brakes, it does get louder over time. you might be able to put a dab of grease on the center piece of the switch, if you are able to get to it. other than that, then a replacement switch will do, and i'd personally recommend an OEM.

the rubber boot that is inside the firewall, will not be making that noise, as it's only rubber.

The sound didn't gradually increase. For 7 years, there wasn't any sound and all of sudden one day I hear the click. It clicks even if the car is completely turned off. Unless I blast the music, the clicking is a huge annoyance. Can I change the switch myself?

thanks

Well today I got the clicking noise under the brake pedal fixed. The brake light switch was making the noise. The dealership ordered it for $60 and replaced it today. No more clicking sound!!!
