5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
got a 2007 Camry 2.4 l4 engine under the hood and its didnt start this until we had a garage change the oil never did this when toyota changed it. mostly when the engine is cold started there is a little bit of a rattling noise it will make until engine is warmed up and once its warmed up at times it will still sound kinda bad when it runs at normal engine tempature but this mostly occurs on cold starts and didnt start doing it until a regular garage changed the oil this never occured when toyota dealership changed it
dont know what kind of oil that was used in it last at that oil change but it started that about a week or so after that
car currently has about 133,000 something miles on it
Should I be greatly concerned over this
Its not that loud of a noise but its noticeable when all doors are closed
You ever had a water pump done on this yet? They're quite common, and the way you describe it, that's what they do. Could be coincidental.
On the other hand, nothing beats the OE oil filter and factory recommended oil to rest easy at night.
Just for grins, open up your oil cap and look down in the hole. You should see a baffle there. If you don't, and are looking directly at the cam shaft, tow it, don't drive it to the dealer and have them remove the broken baffle.
I've seen this many times from quick lube chains pushing the dispenser down the hole and bending something.

First try to find out where the noise may be coming from. For example, close to the water pump or seem to be under the engine valve cover? Does the noise change with engine speed or road speed? etc.

Not sure where the noise comes from but majority of the time when the engine is warm its a rare thing if the engine makes its noise while driving down the road everything is fine like I said its a rare thing if it does it while warm when cold started it will sound fine for 2-4 minutes but after its runs 2 3 4 minutes somewhere in that range the noise starts

Well as stated in my first post this did not occur until we had to oil changed on 10/1/11 at a regular garage and not the dealership if this is a big issue wouldnt it be a louder knocking its not to loud it actually dont even sound like an engine knocking and I know you say water pumps are quite common but if the water pump was going bad wouldnt it be loosing water and overheating which it doesnt do
Sounds to me like the shop used a too thick oil like 10W30 and a cheap oil filter.
Or just a cheap oil and filter. It sounds like you are having dry starts or the cheap filter is running in bypass all the time.
I would first check the baffle under the oil cap and make sure it's not bent from the oil gun like said previously. Then I would do a proper oil change since you said it is directly related to the time you had the oil changed. If its that doesn't do it then you might have other problems like a water pump or top end problem maybe even a bottom end problem. You probably didn't watch them do the whole oil change so who knows if they ran it dry and cleaned it up before delivering it back to you.
This is why I change my own oil. Peace of mind every step of the way.
If the noise started after the oil change then it may be a problem with the oil or filter.
It may be easier for OP to just get another dealer oil change (or change your own) just in case.
There are problems with some mechanics (even dealers) not changing the filter inserts on the newer eco-friendly setups - owners won't be able to tell. So I'd agree that doing your own oil changes is the best.

I posted this for my dads car when you say oil cap are you talking about the dipstick or that black cap that says something like engine oil
The oil cap is black and sits on the left side of the Black engine cover.
Should say something like
0W20
5W20
Energy Conserving
I would do whatever quickly. Failed oil filters and cheap oil can do damage quickly
well this has been ongoing on every cold start of the engine for about a month usually it always happens on a cold start but it was weird went to start the car to let it warm up this morning it was 30 Degrees F started it and usually happens about after five minutes of running the engine this morning though it didnt make the noise at all I would think if it was a baffle issue thing as someone said before that it would of done damaged the motor by now as of Nov 1. it had been one month since oil was changed at garage (Non Toyota Dealership) I believe they have used to thick of oil as I stated above and someone else said also
I know I have posted a lot on here about this but I just hate to keep bugging people
as I said it didnt do it this morning and it had been doing it for about a month
next oil change he said he is going to let the dealership do it because that issue never happened when the Toyota South dealership changed the oil in the car thats also where we got the car used in march of 2010 with 67, 825 miles on it just in case you all are wondering
Yea that definitely sounds like a too thick oil or bad oil filter.
Although he wants to wait until his next oil change I can't imagine a 30 dollar oil change at a dealer (or yourself as a full synthetic oil change will run you about 30 bucks at Walmart) is worth the peace of mind in knowing damage is not slowly being done.
Noise is never a good thing to deal with.
Although I still havent personally heard the noise and it can still be anything.

well he was just using that as an example he knows its more than that at a dealer
I have a 2009 Camry with the i4. I will say that my engine changed sounds and got noiser when I went to
0-20 Mobil 1 synthetic. I really noticed it I have never had an engine change sounds based on what oil you run, but it was very obvious. I think it has to do with the vvti myself although I have no way to back that up.
The Toyota full synthetic is very expensive, it was about $12 a quart from my local dealer, which is part of the reason I went to Mobil 1. I have used it exclusively in everything I own and am a big believer and it was cheaper. You should know if they were using this oil by just the price of your oil changes, they wont just put it in though so I doubt it.
I would ask whoever did it what oil they used. It might put your mind at ease and it might also be the wrong weight of oil.
This is why I change my own oil. Peace of mind every step of the way.
+100.
I use 5-30 Mobil 1 high mileage and Fram Xtended Guard filters, 8-9K miles intervals on my 2007 I-4 with 90K miles.
on 0-20 engine makes some rattling noise, 5-30-all good.
change oil and filter immediately, don't wait.
make sure they use good filter.

as said it mostly happens on a cold start and the only other noticable time is when you come to a stop at random times and its idling in gear it will sound bad sometime then other times it sounds fine thinking about next weekend going and having it changed I hope its not anything to big
