5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I recently had TSB 0146-10 ( grinding noise at cold start ) performed and my cold starts are even louder now. My dealer screwed it up 2 times and I have to return again due to this noise, leaking valve covers, and lots of metal filings found in oil and filter? It seems to me Toyota has a big issue with the VVT cam gear on this engine and wanted to post a video of my cold start to see if others have been experiencing this ?
My vehicle is a 2010 RAV4 with the 2AR-FE ( 2.5 ltr ).
This is after 2 cam gear replacements and the dealer confirmed this to be the sound of a bad VVT gear.
On older toyos the Timing chain Tensioner gets loose, and first crank the loose chain rattles then tightens up with oil pressure. May want to check that out. The odds are its too new to be the tensioner, but tensioners can be lemons too.
Also if you just started running M1 after switching from dino, give it about 1500-2000 miles, maybe something will free up

Thanks,
I did come across the chain rattle issues with older models in my research and questioned the tensioner as well ? The tensioner is removed for the cam gear replacement procedure, maybe they should have replaced it ?
The car will be going back for vvt cam gear number 3 on Monday and I will mention the tensioner issues of the past.
Not sure what the Cam gear replacement procedure is, but when the valve cover is open there's no mistaking a loose tensioner, the chain dangles. Its a cheap part, $25, would think they'd try that at least. Also have a look at the exhaust manifold heat shield, see if somethings loose or bent. Have seen those rattle at startup when the metals cold. Easily verified by taking it off for a start. And then there's the oil baffle connected to the valve cover. Sometimes those get loose and vibrate till they are splashed with oil. You never know, sometimes mechanics over think things. And who knows, could be the anti-drainback valves on the OEM filters, maybe it doesnt like them. try changing brands.

I do blame Toyota because Corporate is forcing me to go back the the same dealer even though I told them over and over again about how frightening their incompetency is! Toyota is more concerned about who will pay for all the repairs and or possibly a replacement, they do not want to hand over one dealerships mess to another. In a way I can't blame them since all the responsibility is on one dealership now, but that's a bean counter's decision !!! Don't listen to the consumer and get it fixed right and end the case quickly? Instead they choose to drag it out until someone else pays for it, meanwhile the poor consumer suffers !!!

How long since you bought it? Up here there's a 3 strike lemon law. My ex wife got a swap on an 06 escape after unsuccessful attempts to repair faulty fuel pump (quits, left her on the side of the road 3 times).
He can blame Toyota all he wants. Toyota won't even acknowledge that the way my engine acts is an issue and yet it's blindingly obvious that something is wrong with it. Toyota has grown large enough to the point that they no longer care about customer issues.
