Gen5 Help: CV Axle Shaft Deep Shaving Groove?

Hi Everyone,

I have 02 Camry I4 auto trans. I replaced my driver side CV Axle and noticed noise from the shaft. Open it again and noticed the groove on the surface of the shaft. Is it normal? Differential seems to be fine, but has noise from it. See image attached.

Thanks.

Stan

Looks like the bearing inner race has failed. Lack of lubrication? The bearings inner race is press fit on the differential carrier so you will need to tear into the differential to get to the bearing. Involves removing the sub frame with the engine and transmission and then seperating the two to get to the bearing. Very big undertaking. "Tuff luck old chum."

The more I look at these pictures, the more intrigued I become with what I am looking at.Am I right in thinking that the seal is still there and the metal part of the seal is badly damaged. That would explain the "groove" on the shaft. Is part of the indside bearing race bent back into the rolling elements and cage or is that part of the seal? I believe this is a two piece tapered roller bearing with the rolling elements and the cage carried by the inner race and press fit on the carrier ,and the outer cage press fit in the case.I was around power generation for many years and have seen numerous failed roller bearings, especially those used on pulleys on coal conveying systems. Someone help me out here.
