Gen5 Spark Plug Question

Hey everybody,
I am still fighting to try & get some decent MPG from my car. I am still getting in the very low 20's even though I am on the highway a lot. Anyways, I had a brainstorm about the spark plugs after I accidentally ran into a video about genuine spark plugs. Can anybody shed some light on this? I am currently using NGK Laser Iridium spark plugs which I got from AutoZone. If it helps, the # on the box that the plugs came in is IFR6T11 & the Stock # is 4589. Has any used these plugs in there car? Would the dealer plugs really make that big of a difference? Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I believe NKG are OEM plugs for the Gen 5...atleast they were in mine... I can get 35mpg hwy with my V6.

Are you sure it is the spark plugs killing your MPGs?

I agree with Punks...have you looked into other possible culprits? Dirty air filter or cabin filter (I think Gen 5's had cabin filters)? Improper tire pressure? There are many factors that are involved with mpg numbers.

Thanks for all the input. Well, I'm not sure what it could be, but I thought I would start there to see is that may be the problem. If not, then maybe I would try something else to see what else could be the issue. Also, mine is the 4 cyl so I am really expecting close to that type of MPG. I took my car to Virginia (which was a straight shot on the highway) & I got like 31 MPG, so really as soon as I get off the highway, it all goes down the toilet from there. I have one of those washable K&N air filters, which I wash out regularly. I'm not sure the cabin filter would really have anything to do w/the low MPG, but I think I just recently changed that as well.

Maybe you just have a heavy foot? The highway mileage seems spot on. How high does it rev when you're driving?

Smooth driving is comfortable and easy. It is also FAST(though not comfortable at speed). I don't care if you apex corners(everyone does) on a public road unless you suck at it(everyone). Hold a proper line or get out of my way.

You would have an MIL if your air/fuel ratio or other engine performance parameters were way off. In town,do you accelerate until you have to lift to brake? I see many drivers around our town driving that way. These are usually the same vehicles that have lots of brake pad dust build up on the front wheels.Regards

NGK spark plugs are OEM, specifically the part number you listed. I recently changed my spark plugs for the first time, and NGK were factory plugs.

There are tons of factors that can affect MPG: Have you tried cleaning the throttle body, seafoaming the intake, and running injector cleaner in the gas tank? what wheels do you have, stock or aftermarket? tire pressure? like mentioned above, do you drive with a heavy foot?

i tend to get 22-24 mpg in my daily driving and i keep my car very well maintained but i do have a lead foot; a lot of my driving is traffic lights to about 60 mph then light throttle to maintain speed so the acceleration kills my mileage

best ive ever goten that ive recorded was 29 mpg on the highway in the summer blasting A/C (and the stereo for that matter) maintaining about 80-90 mph
