2002 Camry Cold Temps Missfire

When outside temps are cold (below 35 degrees) my 2002 camry 2.4L will missfire and run rough. It is very noticeable. After I drive it 10-20 miles and get it good and warm it comes out of it and is fine. It sets no codes or turns on any lights. It did this two winters ago and I finally read somewhere to replace the mass airflow sensor, so I did and it seemed to fix it. It did not act up last winter at all but this winter it started doing it again. So I replaced the mass airflow sensor again but it did not seem to make a difference. Anyone have any other ideas, Thanks

How many miles on your car? Could be plugs, wires or throttle bottle needs a cleaning, etc.

The car has 198000 miles on it. I cant remember but I am pretty sure I replaced the plugs two years ago. Probably would not hurt to do it again.

Okay 1st thing I would do is get the throttle bottle cleaned. Just make sure you get someone who knows what they are doing because this throttle body can be easily damaged if you get the cleaner on electronic parts of the body.

It takes 5-10 minutes just be careful of the electric components in today's throttle body's.

mine has around the same miles and has gone done this on occasion-- never for 10mins but really just on startup-- it would stumble sometimes but that issue went away by itself..

good luck with it-- as long as there aren't any codes and its not missing tooo bad, then forget it and think of all the people that drive american made cars that have already replaced twice the amount of parts we have, in more than likely half the miles

I have seen many of these damaged because people jam a screwdriver in there to open the plates. strips the motor then the plates dont close correctly. I sometimes wedge a board on accelerator or have somebody step on gas to open. I would clean the MAF sensor in addition to the TB. I use MAF to clean both, like it better than TB cleaner. Use an old toothbrush for the TB and edges of the plate. Be sure to clean that hole behind the TB plate using the red tube.

I don't think that works on our cars cuz they are DBW, so pushing the gas won't open the throttle body..

oh wow, learn sumthin new everyday! thnx!

I was kinda curious about the secondary filter in the top half of the intake box-- I've replaced the regular paper filter with a k&n, but I would think that metal filter would be nasty by now..

any thoughts?

Opinion: Not a fan of oiled air filters. I monitor UOA's, and people experience high silicon (si) counts in their lab results using K&N oiled air filters. Removal and going back to paper resolved this in 80% of cases. SI is dirt in the oil, and thats a bad thing for engine wear.

^definitely makes sense-- I've cleaned my k&n twice, barely used ANY oil, I'd rather clean it more often than have to clean the TB..
