On my 02 same issues it was grease the intermediate shaft. Search forum for details, could be that simple.

Please forgive my rant. It is not directed specifically at you but at all posts like this one. Every time I see one my blood pressure starts to rise and that's not good for an old fart like me.

Any car's mechanical operation should be smooth and silent. Anytime that there is noise, grinding, jerking, or anything out of the ordinary, consider it dangerous. You could be creating a danger to yourself and/or anyone else on the road. If you do not know yourself what it is, you should get to a mechanic and let them diagnose the problem.

There are too many people out there driving time-bombs because they don't appreciate the warning signs that they get from their car.

Rant Off, and off my soap box.

Intermediate steering shaft-- part is around $250, fails on almost everything lol..

look up under your steering wheel and the shaft you see that goes through the firewall is the bad one-- the joint that sits in the engine bay(you can see it wayy down underneath) is the one that makes all the noise.

its not difficult to remove or install, but aligning the steering wheel can be kinda tricky.

quoted because this is so damn true it makes me cringe. I always wonder what people are thinking who allow their car to pour white smoke at 75mph going down the highway, or who have the metal bands showing in their tires, or who's brakes haven't been replaced in over 100k miles.

its pathetic, and downright dangerous. i feel your pain.

I am old enough to remember when states had their own yearly auto inspections. In New Mexico,it was commonly called the "brake and light" sticker. The tires, wipers, horn et.al. were also inspected. That yearly inspection helped to get the most dangerous vehicles off the road although there were plently of cars and trucks in the more remote areas that couldn't pass the inspection.I suppose federal regulations forced the states out of the vehicle inspection business. Too bad. I see plenty of junk on Nebraska roads. Rode hard and put up wet. Regards

lol, seriously though, there are some states that just don't care -- I've seen some of the biggest pieces of trash that someone would call a car in MD and FL, and it sucks because I commute in MD

VA has a yearly safety and emissions test, they're happy to take your money any way they can.

lol!! You're right MD does do emissions, but not inspections. I've actually seen a truck in MD that was driving in a straight line, but the truck itself wasn't straight. The passenger side rear was actually following the drivers side front end like when some dogs walk diagonally. It was scary.
