I'm looking to buy a remote starter for my 2010 Toyota Camry SE. Can anyone recommend a good one. I don't want to spend more than $300 and security isn't really an issue for me.
I understand the viper ones are pretty solid, but have read bad reviews about them being installed at Best Buy stores. Is it worth it to buy one at a dealer or should I save money and get it done at a local service shop?
Viper 5901 and get it installed at a certified installer. STAY AWAY from BB and go somewhere official or to a place where a friend of yours has had theirs installed.
Vipers are nice not sure how much they r w install but if u don't wanna spend alot u should look into Autopage, I just recently had one installed on my Camry (Autopage Rs-730) cost me $300 for alarm n remote start and I luv it

The factory one from Toyota is your best bet! It is covered under Toyota's warranty as well. It is their VIP remote start system and it works with your factory remote. Will run you about $280-300 brand new!

hope this helps.
factory one is the worst stay away my 07 camry came with it i yanked it out because the run time is only 10minutes and a soon as you open the door car dies and you have to start it again, you cant adjust any settings either.
i would never get the oem one. and if my car came with i would hate to use it because i feel like i am killing the starter by using it due to the fact that it turns off as soon as you open the door.
maybe you can bypass that by bypassing that door switch?

I have an OEM one I had installed later on and as long as I put my key in the ignition and turn it to the on position I can then drive away as if the key was there in the first place. Only if I touch the brakes without the key in it will the car shut off. I am assuming your factory one is different?

well either its not a factory one or they changed something after 07 because mine as soon as you open the door whether it was locked or unlocked the car would die

Not sure if my Father had anything to do with it.. He is now retired from Toyota Corporate. If mine died when I opened the door or shut of after 10 minutes I would have to agree I would not get it. Once again I had my VIP system installed months after I bought mine.
So if you are looking into aftermarket will you now have two remotes? A factory one and one for remote start? That would be annoying..

i find it annoying not being able to control the features than carrying around a remote

well maybe the way the installer installed it differed from the oem installation. thats all i could think of. the opening of the door and the brake pressing are both just safety features.
if i remember correctly; when i got my viper 5902 installed. the installer asked me how i wanted it installed and i didnt know so i just said the normal way they install it. and i got the brake safety feature. dont know if thats relevant or not.
how hard can it be to bypass the door safety disengage. i would think that all you would have to do is just find a way to open the door with the car knowing. like bypassing the door open switch. just snip some wires and ground them to keep the connection closed. or you can put like tape to keep the push switch pressed giving a signal that the door is closed
