5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I'm about to start shopping for a used Camry, I already have an '06 XLE and a Tacoma, but I need a zoomer (hoopdie for some of you) for work. I think I'll get a '04 or so XLE with 100K that I can run for a couple of years and it will fit in my work allowance. Half of my driving is highway and I do quite a bit of miles per year. I was wondering what the mileage was comparing an I4 to a V6?
I have always been a V6 fan and my '06 XLE does pretty well, it seems according to the dash we are averaging about 22 MPG. If the I4 isn't a whole lot different, I would just as soon have the V6. But if mileage is that much better on the I4, I would wouldnt mind saving the fuel money and jam the extra cash in my pocket for maintenance.
Any suggestions of what to look for on an I4 besides insuring that the timing belt gets changed and tranny gets its fluid changed over 100K?

Go with a V6 since you're doing mostly/all highway driving. Great power for passing (I4 is sluggish)...and great MPG, Highway driving with mine when i set it on cruise control i can get 35mpg avg.
The I4 has a chain, doesn't need to be done. Just check the water pump.

If you're doing all highway a 4 cyl. wouldn't be bad. Now that mine is finally broken in I've been getting 30 mpg highway in winter and 34 or so in summer. But if you do a lot of passing a V6 is a good idea.

I just bought a 2011 XLE I4. With less than 3000 miles on the odometer the dash read 37mpg on the highway. Its rated at 169hp so it is by no means fast, but gets the job done. I suggest the I4.
I consistently get 32 -33 mpg interstate ( I-65, Louisville KY to Nashville TN) and 22 -24 in town driving. Computed by dividing miles driven by number of gallons purchased to refill (I maintain a log to keep accurate cost per mile calculations). Cruise set at 2000 rpm. Low mileage SE - see sig for specs.
The I4 gets better mileage in all scenarios, just as the Hybrid does as well. How MUCH better is variable. Regardless, if fuel economy is important to you, get the one that gets better fuel economy.
PS. It's impossible to get anywhere near 30MPG in a V6 unless your tires are the weak fuel saving narrow ones (so your handling must suck), you drive a granny on the highway at 55mph, and don't drive local or a combination of any of the above.

Mjz say it is impossible to get 30 mpg on a v6.. It is totally wrong.. maybe that is his opinion... I have all the document on fuelly.com to provide that camry v6 can get 30-34 mpg..
so all the future camry buyer, don't be scare to buy a v6. it is reliable, quiet, fast, less maintenance cost.
Only 1-2 miles difference. I'm getting 19-20 MPG on my V6 and 20-22 MPG on my old I4, both with RPM maxed out all the time. Well I drive mostly in the city and traffic too, as for highway 70-80 MPH constant speed I get about 28-30 MPG depending on the road (uphill, downhill, or flat).
Please... 1-2 miles difference won't harm your wallet! But the power difference is nice.
yeap. i4 and v6 drive different if you press on the gas.. v6 is very very smooth. I also think v6 is more quieter because of the belt, different engine design.
well I have 2006 camry v6 3.0l... newer camry are even faster. 2012 camry se v6 run 14.3 seconds 1/4 mile.
