5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hello TN....need your help!!!!! I have an 4cyl 02 Camry LE and I'm getting an P0420 trouble code. I've changed Air/Fuel Ratio Sensor that comes off the front Cat Converter and the rear 02 Sensor that is off of the rear Cat and I'm still getting that code, so as a result I'm changing the front converter that comes off the exhaust manifold. Now my questions is:
#1. Do I have to put any type of compound or anti-sieze on the new gasket that goes over the cylinder head studs?
#2. Do I have to put any compound or anti-sieze on the O-Ring at the bottom of the front Cat. as well before I re-assemble everything?
Not 100% but would think no to the gaskets, too much heat. When you take it apart the answer will be clear. Anti seize on the bolts? maybe if you ever plan to do it again. Would you mind documenting the procedure? Thank you. Also reading about this problem part of the issue is the ECM is programed to trigger the P0420 catalyst efficiency CEL somewhere around 95%. There is a TSB where the cat is replaced along with a ECM reprogram to set the threshold lower. You may want to look into having the reprogram done.

I apologize for taking so long to respond but I bought my cat. converter from a family friend who works at an auto shop for $291. but I found a site online that has the OE cat converter for $310. the site is discount catalytic converter.com and the part is east 40587.
I get a P0420 after a highway trip, turns off around town, so it still passes inspection. Considering cats are 90% good when the light goes on and easy to remove, going to try cleaning mine before I get caught with the light on at an inspection. Will report back how that goes, what I used, etc.

Is this really necessary? Do I need to take the camry to toyota to calibrate the ecu after installing the cat converter?
Some say it is. Some say the use of aftermarket cats will only last a few years. I am not sure if that's why. There are 2 "cat related" TSB's that reprogram the ecu. One for the 80k warranty cat replacement, one for a sulfur smell coming from the cat. The assumption for the cat replacement TSB is the emissions threshold is expanded, or made less sensitive for the CEL (example 80% vs 95%). Not clearly stated, so I cannot confirm.
What I can confirm is I have successfully taken off and cleaned the front cat on a 02 Camry I4 2AZ-FE experiencing a P0420. Out went the light. Because the light is so sensitive (95%) the cat cleans very easy at a car spraybooth. Needs 2 new gaskets. takes about 2 hours. Suggest trying that before buying a new cat.

I pulled the trigger and bought a brand new Bosal cat converter from Rockauto.com. The fitment is terrible! The hole for the heat shield does not alligned to the converter. The o2 sensor hole on the converter is mis-alligned with the heat shield installed!
So, i called rockauto to get a RMA. Man, what a hassle! Rockauto is requesting pictures and they will contact Bosal. Now, I have to wait for days or weeks. I will never buy again from rockauto. I rather spend extra hundred dollars and buy OEM.
Never had a problem with rockauto. The Eastern is a good match. Regardless, should have fit. Hey now you get a chance to clean the old one and just return that one. If your interested I can give you assistance
