5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Just thought I'd like to share my LED interior mod on my 03 Camry.
I added LED strips to: Front footwells, Gear selector, Center console, Glove box, Dome light, Map lights, Rear headrests, Rear footwells, Trunk and Trunk lid.
Looks clean and nice. Most of my 03 Camry's interior are already LED but even after replacing the trunk light with LED, I still find it kind of dark in there. I also find the 02-04 Camry's speedometer to be rather dim. The 05-06 were much better with the Optitron gauge. I wonder if it's possible to convert a 05 Camry's speedometer to work in a 02-04.

I didn't replace any of my lights (except the map lights) with LEDs with socketed bulbs, I replaced the entire thing with waterproof LED strips. They come in 5m rolls off ebay, you cut to length and solder wires on. Much brighter.

I have the same issue. Wished I could have gotten a Gen 5.5 just for the gauges and taillights, but it was at least a grand more for one in worse condition and higher mileage than mine.

looks awesomely bright! Could you do a DIY on the dome light? My trunk light has a dual 5-LED 3W modified into it, but fitting those into the dome lights are pretty difficult. I have one of these 6-LED bulbs in my dome light, but I'd love to have it a bright as yours!

After removing the assembly, there are two holes that go through the plastic and metal near the bulb's contacts. I simply screwed two screws in, winding some wire around the screws to make electrical contact.
These wires (red and black) run across and down my B pillar, under the carpet to the center console. The individual foot well LED strips split from these wires under the center console, to each individual foot well.
The LED strips at the top of the rear glass branch off from the bottom of the B pillar, underneath the rear passenger door sill, and up the weather stripping along the back seat to the headliner, and then across to the two strips above the rear headrests.
The 4" dome LED strip is wired directly to the two screws on the dome light assembly, and is held up with double sided tape. The old bulb is disabled.
This allows my foot-well, dome and headrest LEDs to work when my doors are opened.
Let me know if you need more details, pictures, or a video.

I finally replaced the CCFL lights I put into my car over 5 years ago with these SMD LED strips - what an affordable upgrade! I only got the 3528 SMD LEDs, which are already brigher than the white CCFLs I had, so the 5050 SMD LEDs speedkar9 has must be crazy bright!
So far I've put them into the footwells, center console, shifter lights, and cupholder. Still have to do the glove box and replace the CCFLs in the trunk So much easier to work with than CCFLs.

The LED strips that I have actually have three SMD LEDs every two inches, which are twice the density than the ones you have. Indeed, these strips are cheap, brighter and more flexible (modular) than CCFL's.
Nice looking center console, did you wire them all up to your PRND2L light so they're always on at night? How did you position the strip inside the cup holder?

Actually, the LED strip I got is the same density with 3 LEDs every ~2 inches (300 LEDs in 5m roll), but I have the 3528 SMD LEDs instead of the 5050 SMD LEDs. There are rolls with 1/2 the density as well (150 LEDs in 5m roll).
My center console lights are indeed wired up [parallel] to the shifter (PRND2L) light, so they turn on/off/dim with the rest of the dash. They're not always on at night, especially when I turn my car off. I know what you mean, of course - just having fun getting technical
Here's where the LEDs are in my cup holder, so they can be covered with the inset that flips down. Drilled a tiny hole for the wires:

Nice tip on the cup holder, I didn't know where to hide the strip, since my inset flap keeps coming out.
Your strips are non-waterproof and don't have the silicone coating, making it more flexible around the bend. I don't know if my strips can do that, but I'll give it a shot.

Hey speedkar9, I was wondering where you purchased your LED strips from?
I want to give the LED in the footwell mod a try in my Gen6. Your DIY is very helpful.
