swapped motor...cranking no start on an 06 camry

Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous new year to all. I have a dilemma i need assistance with. Car is my friends 06 camry le and i have put another engine and tranny from a running 04 camry. I have also used the harness from the 04 since the 06 didnt come with the engine or harness. The problem is the car cranks but will not start. When using the 04 ecu, the car has fuel delivery issue (no fuel reaches the front i.e. the pump isn't working). The moment i changed the ecu to the 06 one, the fuel issue is solved but still cranks and doesn't run. There is spark coming thru to the plugs. My question is what is causing it not to start ? Another thing is when i try to read the codes on a scanner, there is an error communicating with the ecu. So what is the correct combination of ecu/wiring harness. How do i go about solving this issue. Thanks for your responses.

i doubt the engine computer is much different between years but the 06 originally had a 5 speed auto and the 04 has a 4 speed

I believe both these years use A Key/ECU match immobilization. A transponder in the key matches a registration at the ECU. Do the doors remotely unlock? Also unlock drivers door manually with the key and try a start. Try the other key, maybe it will fit in the ignition, not sure.

Thx for ur replies. The computers are different. For instance, the one in the car now is the 06 module but has one set of connection hanging out (labelled 23). The harness, motor & tranny are all 04 camry 2.4. As for the keys, both 04 & 06 have no chips in them as confirmed by locksmith. If I use the 04 harness & 04 computer, the fuel pump doesn't work. Im thinking of looking for an 06 harness & see what happens. Any other ideas are welcome. Thx.

Guess there's no transponder dot on the metal shaft of the keys. Bummer. Why are you changing the engine?

I am going to assume you need an 06 harness as some of the pinouts are different.

I'm thinking so too but the harness is a bit pricey from the dealer. I'm also thinking of using the 04 computer + 04 harness and figure out why the fuel pump isnt pumping fuel to the front. That might be the cheapest option.. Any more ideas anyone?

Update:: after changing all the harness & fuseboxes from the 04, the car started the first time. So, the best thing to do while doing such a project, is to swap all the harness & computer from the other car. Thanks to all the contributors.
