Oil Change interval for 2011 Camry

[Not sure if this is the right forum or not. But couldn't find an engine forum.]

I have a 2011 Camry bought in 06/11 with 2.5L 4 cyl, that included pre-apid service at 5K mile intervals for first 25K miles. I took car in for 5K service a few weeks ago. Dealer did not change oil. Service writer told me factory spec is fully synthetic oil changed every 10K miles. The manual confirmed writer's comments.

Oil change every 3-5K is cheap insurance. I am debating whether to go ahead and change it myself at 5K 15K and let dealer do it at 10K and 20K. I'd like some informed opinions on 10K oil change intervals.

ok, i have a '10 camry, 4 cyl..

i did not "pre-pay" for any oil changes, i get them for free at 10,000 miles intervals...

this is supposed to take place at 10,000 mile intervals for a two year period, or 25,000 miles, which ever comes first..

now, here is what i did...

i bought 6 of the Toyota TRD synthetic oil filters for "about $5.00 each (discounted because i bought so many, plus good old fashion talking with the parts man, and many other things i bought for the car).

i went in at 5,000 miles, and told them to rotate the tires and change my filter ONLY.....and i will pay for the tire rotation and filter...

the mechanic "screwed up" and changed the oil as well...

since this was a "screw up" on thier part, i was NOT charged for the oil change..

i go there every 5,000 miles, and they change the oil, rotate the tires and i give them my filter.

i walk away "free of charge"....so they are (at least at my dealership) doing oil changes, full synthetic mind you, at 5,000 mile intervals...

Toyota will only pay for every 10,000 miles service..how the dealer is charging it back to them, i do not know, nor do i care..

but yes, the synthetic "oil" can go 10,000 miles.....

but not for me, i feel good at 5,000 intervals......"oil" is cheap as you say....

if you "pre-paid" for your oil changes..?? demand they do it when YOU WANT IT, as after all...
YOU PAID FOR IT...

but in all frankness, i think it is "included" on all Toyota's 2 years of service for free..????

so if you paid...you need to look deeper into this......check out Toyota's website regarding "free 2 year service"

I have a hard time waiting 10K for an oil change. 7500 is the recommendation on our Accord and I can barely stand that! It's every 5K on most everything we own. Cheap insurance... although it may not be completely necessary.

Nothing in life is free. We all pay for it somewhere. Sure, I didn't pre-pay in that it wasn't a line item on the contract. However, Toyota, Inc is a profit making entity, and does nothing for free. Toyota started the 25K service package after they got screwed by our esteemed DoT over the non-esxistant "sudden acceleration" ghost stories hit the press (gotta help out those unions running Gov't Motors). I got it with my Yaris purchased in April 2010. Even though Toyota was fully exonerated (and the feds kept the $50 million "fine" (extortion is a better term)) Toyota kept up the good-will 25K service promotion. Like the spaghetti sauce commercial of yesteryear, "its in there". It is simply baked into the price.

The full synthetic Toyota 0W-20 oil is a very high quality oil that should be much more than enough for 10k mile intervals. My Mercedes's oil life monitor wouldn't tell me to get an oil change until 13k miles most of the time. There are BMWs that go to 15k, and Porsches up to 20k.

"In one of our previous studies it was observed that engine oil samples collected from fleet vehicles after 12,000 mile drain interval showed 10-15 % lower friction and more importantly, an order of magnitude lower wear rate than those of fresh oils."

"As in the previous study, the results showed that the aged engine oils provide lower friction and much improved wear protection capability. These improvements were observed as early as the 3000 mile drain interval and continued to the 15000 mile drain interval."

I may have missed this but can you tell me:

1) how your setting the OCI - OLM, Service engine light, the manual or the dealer recommendation?

1) what is the recommended weight of oil, synthetic or dino, and brand?

3) Driving service - what %highway?

4) Miles per year?

5) Do you change your own oil? If not, who does?

Need that info to comment accurately.

The manual says 10k so I go 10k. I'm 90% highway tho and do 10k in less than 6 months. I'm running amsoil now and I might get it tested at 8k and see how far I can take it.

Its not 1930 any more, the worst oil now is far better than the best oil back then. Changing oil any sooner than 5k is a waste to me.

Change or have changed the oil and filter in the spring and fall. This is inexpensive maintenance compared to having repairs made by the dealer or an independent shops. Regards

1) Haven't reset anything, as mileage less than 10K OCI recommended by manual and dealer (dealer parrots the manual). Since annual mileage low I'll change by calendar.
2) Manual/dealer oil is 0W-20 fully synthetic (Toyota brand)
3) 10% highway
4) 8K-9K annually (I'll change by calendar)
5) Dealer will do oil changes on this vehicle.
'11 Camry - dealer service
'10 Yaris - dealer service
'09 Taco - independent shop for service, except warranty
'03 Corolla - independent shop for service

This is only one factor: valve train friction and wear. I wonder how the other factors mentioned in the abstract are effected by age.
