Gen5 Air Intake Box on 2006 Camry SE

What is that white filter that is in the top portion of the air intake box? Is that the sound dampner/white silencer? Is that something that anyone has tried removing?

You're pulling our leg right? That is the air intake air filter for combustion air. There is also a cabin air filter under the heater blower located above the passenger side footwell.

I'll take a pic when I get home...... I was told by someone that this was there (along with the air filter) to reduce noise.

That is the filter for Hydrocarbons. It is not a serviceable filter on models equipped with it (most Toyotas 2004 and up).

^ Yup, it is the filter for hydrocarbons. I have removed it on my intake to get more airflow. It is riveted in, with rivets that are built into the intake box... so to remove it you have to essentially break/cut off the rivets. That means once you remove it, you cannot put it back in... at least not easily.

EDIT: found a link for removal of this on a 4Runner, but its essentially the same: http://www.top4runners.com/ja/2007/hcf.html

Excellent! I may hit up the local salvage yard for the top portion of the air intake box, if he'll sell it like that and try it out with the K&N filter.

LE05, how you noticed a difference?

I did this so long ago I don't really remember. I don't think there was any noticeable difference, and I doubt you'll notice any either.
