Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
After driving my mothers 2010 Camry this weekend I was wondering why my car has so much engine whine compaired to her 2010 with the same 2.5l engine both cars have about the same miles 35000 each I was told by the dealer the whine is normal for the new engine but is the 2011 different than the 2010 Someone else told me its the alt. making this whine if this is so could changing the fluid make it quitter or what?

It is the power steering pump, if the sound peaks when hot at 2000 to 2400 rpm. You can remove the belt to verify as it has its own.

Are you sure it's not the transmission? Mine whines when it is cold but slowly decreases as it warms up to where I don't notice it when hot. It is quite pronounced when cold.

The first dealer told me on my first visit, no problem found, transmission operates as designed. On the second trip the said it was the transmission all gen 6.5 do it. On the trip to another dealer it was the power steering pump, recommended replacement. I was on a tight schedule and couldn't wait. My original dealer refused to change the pump...
The pump was changed at dealer two, and at least the noise don't drown out the radio any more, and turn the heads of people walking on sidewalks...

You can have the dealer look at it but from what I have been told its Normal for this year although the 2010s don't make this noise ( I know because My Parents Have A 2010 that is as quite as can be ) But not my 2011 it sounds like it has a bad powersteering pump all the time but dealer says its normal
