I've been searching through the whole forum for a while and im a noob at this. I got some projects in mind that requires me to do wiring but the thing is i have no idea how to wire. I tried teaching myself how to wire but i dont know how to do it. i tried looking on youtube but it doesnt really help.
some things i dont know include:
-how do you splice wires and how do you add another positive and negative source to it?
-how do you add a wire to an existing wire so it can be longer? (example, on a piece of LED strip the positive and negative is like 6 inches long and i want to add onto it to make it longer)
-how do you give it power without directly hooking it up to the battery?
-how do you add a switch into the process so you can control when to turn it on or off?
-just basics stuff
im a super noob at it and have no idea how to do it. please help! its holding me back from doing stuff to my car and my winter break is going to be over in 2 weeks!
if you want to extend wires you can solder additional wire on to the existing. if you don't like soldering. you can use taps like t-taps, butt connectors or posi-taps. under the steering column theres wires you can tap in to to get power, jut make sure you tap in to the one you want cuz some power is constant meaning itll stay on even when car is off. if you want a switch i believe you can just buy them at your local radio shack and wire is up with what you want.
You are asking very fundamental "wiring 101" questions. I suggest that you explore an automotive trades program at your local jr. college or adult ed at a local high school. At the least, have someone with a bit more undstanding of wiring "101" assist you with your projects. If you don't know where the firewall is on your car, nothing said here will be of much help - ps - the big piece of sheet metal separating the engine compartment (located under the hood) from the passenger area (where you sit to drive the car) is the firewall.
doing electrical/wire work is pretty stait foward.... ive had noone teach me anything and ive wired up my entire sound system among alot of other things ive modded on my car
anyways ive included a pic where to go thru on the firewall on my gen5..... if u look to the left of the brake booster u will see a dinky blue wire going into the side of a rubber grommet
good luck

Go to
Amazon.com and search for 'basic electricity' and/or 'basic automobile electricity'. There are many books for less than $20 and if you read the synopsis you will find one or two that fit your learning needs.
under the hood in the way back near the air filter tube thingy haha. i used a wire coat hanger to feed small wires through. the amp power wire was easy since its thick. the wire goes through to near the gas pedal.
theres also drilling your own hole and use a grommit like i did when i had to install my alarm.

If the wires are like those for my cathode lights, then the wiring is very small, maybe 24AWG or smaller which means crimps and t-taps are really out of the question because the wire is too small.

true, yeah those wont work you can either solder or i believe positaps make one for 18-24 awg

thats the site its easy crimping reusable cause all it is is just screwing on and its secure too. its good depending on what your wiring.
i was thinking about using a non isolated connector and then putting a heat shrink tube over it. i saw a video on youtube and it looks like its pretty tight and will definitely get the job done
