5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 02 Camry LE with a CEL issue, which I believe is the gas cap but i'm not 100%. Don't want to replace the cap right now to find out it doesn't help, but sick of looking at the CEL. I've had the cluster out, it's very easy, but the CEL is an LED so how do I remove it?
why on earth would you want to remove it? that's the stupidest thing i've ever heard, no offense.
just put a piece of electrical tape over it if you're sick of looking at it. or better yet... get the code scanned (free at autozone) and fix it properly, which is more than likely less work than removing the cluster and desoldering the LED.
i'm amazed at some people's approach to fixing problems on the car

i scan check engine lights all the time at my job (advance)...... it takes 10 seconds to do and youll kno what ur dealing with...... if it is a gas cap there literally like 10 bucks or it could be something else like a vacuum leak or bad cat but its better to know than to guess

Thanks for the constructive tips everyone. oh wait, there were none haha. I knew I would receive comments like this, but didn't think everyone would join in... Usually the tone is set by the first reply I guess.
I've reset it numerous times, it keeps coming back obviously. I am fully aware that autozone / advance will reset it, but same problem. And no, we do not have emission tests here.
didn't mean to come off harsh, but honestly... removing the check engine light LED will cause more and potentially severe problems down the road. It's better to scan the code, look up the code to see what is causing it, and fix it properly.
Resetting the code does nothing, if the underlying problem causing the code is not fixed. It will obviously keep popping back up.
You say you have scanned the code, why don't you post what it is? We can then tell you for sure what will fix the code... and you won't be bothered by the CEL anymore.

No problem. I've scanned the code, it's an evap code (have the # written down). This is what lead me to think that it was a cap leak, just wasn't 100% that was it.

Guess i'll keep searching. Thanks anyway.
It keeps coming back because you didn't fix the problem. Fix it and it will go away.
