Smart Key Question

I have searched this forum as well as general google searches for no answer to my question, so if this is a repeat question I apologize. I have a 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid and my question is can you program a regular key fob from a non smart key camry to a smart key camry and it work? I completely realize that with it not being a smart key I could not start the vehicle with the non smart fob, and that I couldnt use the door sensors, but would the functionality of the clicker itself (pressing unlock and lock on the clicker) work? Or do the fobs work on completely independent frequencies. I was assuming that the smart keys sensor for the pust start and door sensors works independently from just using the fob to manually push unlock (if that makes any sense at all). I just wanted another key incase I lock my key in the car without having to purchase an additional smart key. I realize it would be smarter to just buy an extra keyblank from a smart key and have it cut, but it just made me wonder if its even possible. Also I've read many times that if you buy a used smart key on ebay the car recognizes that the key belongs to another car and you cant have it programmed to yours, so thats why I'm completely ruling out buying a used smart key (And I'm not about to drop 200 on a extra key)

Sorry for the lengthy post I just wanted to clear up as much as I could without rude replies...

Thanks!

So if I understand this right, you want to get a spare key made so you won't lock yourself out of the car?

If that's your fear, then let me elaborate a little more on knightslugger's response.

The smart key system can detect whether or not your keys are outside or inside the vehicle and hence will not allow you to lock the doors if it detects the keys are inside. If you attempt to lock the doors and close them while the keys are still inside, it will beep at you and unlock the doors. If you lock it in your trunk, then the trunk is unlocked and you are able to open the trunk once again with the press of the trunk button.

When I bought the Lexus ES several years ago, I was curious as you are and I've tested all possible ways to lock the keys inside the car; trust me, the car won't let you.

The only way to lock your keys inside the car is to leave one key fob in the car, and lock the car with the 2nd key fob. And being that the key is INSIDE the car, the door sensors on the doors will not activate and people on the outside cannot open the doors. You would then need to open the car using the 2nd key fob.

Hope this answers your question.

Cool

My question was more less just a hypothetical question if a regular fob can be programmed to work the doors. I have learned (by accident already lol) that you can't lock your keys in there, I was more less just wanting a third transmitter that wouldn't start the car. Just was wondering if it was possible
