5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I'm getting my moms Black 2010 Camry SE dual VVT -i, but apparently NO V6.
What kind of performance can I expect? And what are my options for performance mods? My friend's family has a Mini track and some of the kids go racing there every once in a while, how would I stand up? It's all mostly there parents sedans but still. Jw. Thanks in advance

The 2.5 4 cyl is a pretty nice peppy engine, but don't expect too much from it. There really are no performance mods for it as far as I know. Just be happy you're getting the car and enjoy it, it's a great car.

I know, I love it and that's why I've pushed so hard to get it. Lol. But I'm going to guess that none of the Turbo's would work on it? And how would it handle a 50 shot of Nitrous? I'm just curious on the different MODs I can do to push the performance, really looking for anything.
Congrats man. Welcome to the gen 6.5 side...lol
My experience-
I've driven from BMW e90 to Infiniti g25, nothing fast but pretty close competition to my current 2011 SE 4 banger. Since the other two were 6 cylinder I thought the camry would disappoint me but as of now I have no complaints. I did go from a 6.1L hemi(RIP) to a 4cyl which is a HUGE downgrade but compared to the beamer and the infiniti, I like driving the camry better. Never bought this car for racing, I wanted something nice and normal ATM
Performance wise the 2.5l isn't too bad. I've stood next to jettas and lancer GTS( not evo!) here and there. It's also fairly quicker than the two cars stated in the first paragraph but they start to pull away after certain speeds.
Performance parts none maybe get a CAI exhaust and tune it but thats pretty much it.
Maybe a front strut bar and rear sway bar could help you around curves.
If you've got the time and money turbo it if not trade it in for a V6.

As for parts your budget always comes in to play.
Not many performance parts available for the 2.5L.
Maybe a front strut bar and rear sway bar could help you around curves.
It also depends on what kind of cars you could be facing...
Glad to join lol. And budget isn't really a problem because I have a few months to save up for the next big race. They have a big thing at their country home (where the private track is) every summer and that's when I'm going to compete, so I have about 5 months.
Thanks for the tips about the Bars, I'll start looking into them. If you have any other Ideas I wouldn't mind hearing them.
Also are the exhaust Mods universal?
I'm new to the whole car Modding scene

As far as I know, nobody has turbo'd or nitrous'd the 2.5 yet, and I wouldn't want to be the guinea pig to try it, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
Just drop in a K&N filter and call it a day, don't waste the money on the CAI as it's really not going to be a huge improvement.
As for the exhaust, it's your choice. I don't think changing the exhaust on the 2.5 is going to help you out much.

A K&N oil or air filter? And CAI is a cold air intake, correct?
On the Exhaust, could I "use" any of the other after-market exhaust setups I see on here? (Dual Exhaust setups are in mind mostly)
Also the Camry is a Automatic, but has the "manual" shifter in it, should I be using automatic during the race, or should I pop it over into the manual? And when should I Up/Down shift? I'm a total noob. :/
PS exhaust was for cosmetic purposes :-D

The only "brand" exhaust I've seen on our 2.5l's is the Borla Dual exhaust. I think its the one from the v6 model IDK someone correct me if im wrong.
Oh and my bad about the CAI, I ment the drop in filter since there are no CAI available for the 2.5l yet. None that I know of.
Do you have a part number for the Borla? I tried to find it on their website(borla.com) and went through the "find the system for you specific vehicle" in the top right, and nothing came up.

So basically my only options are
- Strut Bar
- Rear Sway Bar
- Air filter
- Borla dual Exhaust (apparently the on for V6 should fir the 2.5l)
K&N doesn't list a CAI for the 2010-2011 2.5, don't waste your money on it since you don't know if it'll work. Edit: I looked at it, it's for the v6. For whatever reason, they're listing it as fitting for the 2.5 which it will not.
Sorry, meant to say the air filter. The oil filter won't get you anywhere :p
With the Borla exhaust, I'm pretty sure you have to use the v6 mufflers. Just remember, this is just for sound, there are no performance improvements doing this.
Edit 2: No comment on the manual shift, the Camry will automatically shift/downshift (If I remember correctly) if you don't do it. Feel free to give it a try and a few runs and see what happens compared to auto mode.

Oh okay thanks
And yeah I wanted the exhaust for the looks of it.
I'll try out the Manual-Auto thing whenever I get the keys then
I don't know if I would trust that site since the K&N CAI is still in process for the 2.5l.
As for the exhaust I've seen couple on ebay. They will be listed as for V6 model.
And as of now yes those are really the only options you have. You could make the car lighter by getting lighter rims and/or better tires. Depends on what rims you get though. Not sure if the camry came with a spare but you can also remove that for just the race to shed some weight.

Hope all of that help you for the race
Yeah I read that the V6 exhaust works fine on the 4i. And what are some recommendations for the tires/rims?
BTW the Manual mode in the Camry is compelete trash. It shifts automatically even in manual!!... You could however mess around with it and see what suits your driving style.
I leave mine in 4th if I am driving around 40-60mph it feels more responsive IMO. If Im on the highway and I want more feel on the throttle I leave the car in 5th. I use 6th or D on my slow days:p
Thats my conclusion after Playing around with the "manual" mode for 10 months.
