5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I've searched the threads but haven't found the exact solution to my problem so as a result I'm asking is it better and easier for me to just change the charcoal canister to solve these 3 problems(P0446,P0441,P0440) or should I just attack them one by one. Also, I just put in a new cat converter off of the exhaust manifold about 2 months ago and I don't want the current error codes to affect the new cat. I am a DIY'er but do you suggest that I tackle this or an certified mechanic. I don't want to spend more than I have too.
My car is an 2002 Camry LE 2.4L w/222k miles. that is the original canister from when I bought the car new in Jan. 02. Helllllllllpppppp. :-)

What makes you think that the system the codes relate to could affect the cat?
My suggestion would be to start with a new factory gas cap and see if that doesn't do the trick. My guess is that if the car has that many miles, that you have the original gas cap on. If not, it looks like you are headed down the charcaol canister route.
I am just a parts guy, but when a tech gets these codes, it almost always is either a gas cap or charcoal canister.
Should you need a new Canister, I do sell to members for 30% off MSRP and shipping is only $2.00 over actual shipping costs.
Good luck and hope this information proves helpful.

Won't hurt the cat, and now that you know how to remove it...just take it off and clean it out next time...the CEL P0420 goes off at 95% so it still almost new when the light goes off. IMO its a "bad design" with the Camry (bad, unnecessary ECU programming to make Californian environmentalists happy). Anyways your new codes are related to the evap system. Verify the vsv hose and valve is ok (the one that loops over the intake) you can try replacing the VSV valve at the top of the canister. I found a lot of times just running a few bottles of techron concentrate returned the valves to normal, may be worth a shot
thx toyopartsman....I will definitely try the new gas cap to see if that solves the problem.....
leakyseals....after trying the new gas cap I'll follow up on your suggestion of the vsv valve & hose..... I'll be sure to let you guys know what solved the problem.
TedL.....the current codes relate to evap emissions but I just wanted to get these issues resolved because one thing may contribute to another and the cat converter is a part of the emissions with the car.
There is also a VSV at the airbox that can fail an cause these codes. With 222K miles it is very possible. The other suggestions are spot on.
I would go in order of
Gas Cap
Verifying VSV operation by hearing for click when energized
Replacing Airbox VSV
Charcoal canister (IIRC it comes complete with all new VSVs on it)

Much to my surprise the new oe gas cap solved the problem of my error codes P0446,P0441 & P0440. Since I've replaced the gas cap I've placed approximately 200 plus miles on it and the check engine is still off. Thx again to toyopartsman.........
they're back........the codes P0440,P0441, & P0446.......well I guess it's time to change the charcoal canister.......uggghhhhhhhh....Oh yeah......I'm also having door lock issues....When I put my car in gear to drive....the driver side door stays unlocked while the other 3 doors automatically lock. I also notice that when using the key fab to lock the car when exiting it doesn't lock the drivers side door.....just the other 3 doors.

Sounds like a broken wire in driver's door, or, rather, between the door and the body.
Not sure if you are topping of or rounding your fuel to the nearest dollar but if you are, you should stop. My 02 camry had the same problem. I used to round my fuel up to the nearest dollar. If it's $30.59 I would round it up to $31.00. I guess over time, it will damage the canister cause the extra fuel goes into the canister. I replaced the fuel cap and stop topping off. My CEL has been off for years now. I didn't have to change the canister.
