Transmission Issue?

I have a 2005 Camry, Base, 4cyl, 190k. The last couple of weeks while everyday driving the engine will rev up like the transmission has gone to neutral. It only does it for a couple of seconds and then back to normal. There is no rhyme or reason why it does it. We bought the car brand new and the fluid has never been changed. Have any of you ran into this problem? Thanks.

You bought it brand new, has 190k miles and the transmission fluid has not been changed not even once? It's probably time to change it.

Does it appear to be slipping?

Not slipping...almost like disengaging or going to neutral. The problem only happens sporadically.

Does it happen when you are driving or at a stop? Is your AC on? The condenser turning on/off can make it seem like the engine is revving high. It also depends on how much refrigerant is in the system. Too much makes the engine rpm skyrocket

It has done it with the AC on and off. Also its while driving down the road mostley at around 60 mph. And this is definitley something that is out of the ordinary.

Have you checked the transmission oil? If its black and smells burnt, time for some new oil. Drain and refill, dont flush. See if it gets better. There are methods that let you do a full drain/refill by running the car and refilling while draining from a hose, but i haven't the slightest in how it goes. Its here somewhere, just needs a lil digging. If you do a normal drain/refill, it will take maybe 3-4 of them to clean out most of the old tranny oil. Best time to do them is when you do oil changes since you're under the car already

It doesn't happen while shifting. What the best fluid to put back in it? How many quarts does it usually take to drain and refill?

First check the condition and level of the ATF, then change it along with the felt filter that's probably plugging up.

Is the felt filter under the pan?

It's in the pan. There are a few pan bolts that are hard to access. Some TN'ers don't have problems but others have to jack up the transmission slightly. So YMMV.

Here is a picture for the U250E transmission (do you have the 5-speed? Check the door decal for the exact code). It's $20 at many parts stores:

You can also use fully synthetic Valvoline MaxLife ATF from Advance Auto. With their ~40% coupon code it's a real deal.

I had that problem on my 02, a simple drain and fill with T-IV was all it needed. If your stick says T-IV on it, suggest you stay with it. get a new washer from the dealer while your there, they give them away for Free.
