5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have used the search feature to find answers to my question and nothing seems to point me in the right direction. I keep running into threads dealing with tire size but I need recommendations on tire brand/ model. I have a 2011 Toyota Camry SE 4 cyl with the factory Toyo Proxies J33's which are now shot at 23k and in need of replacement. I mainly drive on the highway and I need a tire thats gonna last long and is also quite. I have read about the Michelin Primacy MXV4's but are there any others that you have had good experiences with? What tire brand/ model do yall recommend? If this has been addressed already can someone link me to that thread as I cant find it.
The top ranked Michelin Primacy MXV4 is rated at 8.4, and if you have Costco membership get just these there. You'll get 50K mile tread wear warranty (used to be 60K), and lifetime road hazard, rotation and balance. The lug nuts are hand torqued too. If you get less than 50K miles on these then they'll credit the prorated difference.
I think the third ranked Primacy MXM4 is a "green" tire with lower roll resistance. So there is a slight (0.1) less favorable reviews on the wet/dry traction side and 0.3-0.4 less on the cold traction side. But you should gain a little more (fraction) of MPG.
The second ranked Continental ExtremeContact DWS is rated at 8.4. Another 8.4 is the General G-MAX AS-03, which is a budget brand of Continental (like BF Goodrich and Michelin).
Based on the reviews, the Michelins is the quietest of the three, but generally Contis are pretty good too. I wouldn't use GoodYears because they tend to be noisy, and I wouldn't touch Bridgestones with a 20' pole. So check out the reviews there. I'd go with Michelin Primacy.

Thank u for your very informative post JohnGD. Does anyone actually have the Michelins on their SE, comment on how they are? How long have they lasted etc?
I just bought my Camry a few weeks ago and it came with brand new Firestone FR710's. The ride is great and they're quiet. We'll see how long they last. I had Firestones on my Explorer and they didn't last long.

I just put the Michelin Primacy MXV4's on mine at 20,000 miles. I love them...
The OEM tires were cupping and the local dealers service department said they were "flat and not feathered". Due to a poor factory alignment, the LF and RR were out the same amount, so there was not any pulling, played heck on the tires at 18,000 miles. I put up with them till almost 26,000 miles and dumped them, I got the 60,000 mile warranty with mine.
Michelin, gave me a good discount because 1 tire was cupped bad and the other 3 feathered bad but not to a replaceable stage yet.
On a very, very smooth road surface (almost like glass) I can hear the tires, otherwise the best tires I have ever had...
I have less than 4,000 miles on them, so how long they will last, would be a guess.

I'll vouch for the MXV4's as well. They are a great all around tire, much better than the old Hankook Ventus ES4's that originally came with my SE. Great wet performance, great dry performance. I can't say much about snow performance, I only got to test it in 2-4 inches when I went up to Chicago back in December, but it did pretty well too.
I went to Discount Tire and got 4 215/55/17 MXV4's for 799.16 (Tires themselves were 640, all those taxes and installation fees added up). Much cheaper here than what Costco and Sams quoted me.
Those Michelins are really nice tires but they do have very soft sidewalls, which isn't a bad thing but they will flex under hard cornering. I have 15k on my stock toyo's and they still look pretty good, but the outer edges are cupping a little bit even tho I keepem rotated every 5k miles. The only thing I don't like about them is that they are really noisy.

For those that posted how long have the michelins lasted? Miles wise?
MXV4's came on my '10 Camry as OEM tires. Have 38K miles on them at this point with a lot of tread left. I don't hot-rod but have taken a couple of 1000+ mile trips plus around town. I have had them rotated every 5K per manual.

I have been pretty happy with the Yokohama V4S on my 2005 4cl SE. They are quiet, they wear well, good wet weather and snow traction and they were less expensive than the Michelin tires. The Yoko's have a 50k mile warranty (I have about 35k on them now)
The only downside is yoko does not appear to make them anymore.
it looks like they have been replaced by these - AVID ENVigor (H&V) $96 each right now
Haven't been able to get the tires yet as my car is still at the dealer getting a new bumper and grille. They cant seem to get the grille on without having gaps around the bumper opening. So i just realized the Michelin Primacy Mxv4's are an H rated tire. is it okay to get a H rated Tire or should i just get the Yokohama's?
