Did you look at the maintenance log to see if it had been filled out for every required service date? Did it even have the maintenance log? I wouldn't even consider a used car that didn't have the log filled in and which I could verify. Always remember "buyer beware." Regards
"Certified" used cars are just marketing. It's a buzzword designed to make people feel confident buying a used vehicle... pure and simple.
Is it mostly bullsqueeze? YES.
Does it work? YES.
People fall all over themselves believing that they are getting s somehow "better" vehicle. The only real advantage is that some come with a bit of an extended warranty.
Seems like there's a bit of misadvertising.... the toyota websit says these are the advantages of buying a toyota certified used vehicle: The Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Advantage
Other than a possible warranty extension, that is all marketing fluff.
True. I bought a certified 06 Camry with a bad water pump. Very common issue. I was losing coolant and saw the dried corrosion on the water pump. My mechanic friend said bring it to the dealership still covered under Powertrain warranty, which it was. Dealership said no signs of bad water pump.
I bought an aftermarket one (Gates brand) and my mechanic friend installed it for free. Once removed it was obvious the bearings were failing. Brought the bad water pump back to the dealership. They agreed it was bad, but that I couldn't prove it came out of my car

I'm not saying that the added warranty might not be a really good thing here. In some cases it might save your butt! I'm betting that most people never use it (and so is Toyota!)
Sunnyvale toyota service department manager told me car had been service,Clearly it was not! From the condition of the oil & filter & air filter my car had not been service in over 30,000 miles or more! I called toyota cutomer service All they did was send me voucher for A free oil change! LOL
FYI,The oil filter was A fram made in china.

Honestly its a good sign it was a fram, it was probally changed at least once then.
After reading this thread I decided to go check my dealer's integrity. I was disgusted when I removed the air filter. They advertise that they supposedly do a bazzillion point inspection or whatever it is and replaced anything that needs it. It was a chevy dealer not that it matters.

Mine looked worse than that... One week after the "service"...
The service department (Toyota) had just "cleaned the worst out".
They wanted to charge me for a "filter and install" $135.00 plus...
Didn't get it, I did it myself in less than 5 min. and for a little over $25.00.
I will let you make your own assumptions, go ahead...
