5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I am replacing the JBL speaker and the factory amp (86280-0W390) with aftermarket speakers and amps. I am keeping the original radio with nav. My question is about the VSS wire (purple) that connects directly to the JBL amp, what does this wire do and should I do something with the wire? I searched the net and the forums, but I was unable to find an answer or iformation about it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Dont quote me on this, but I think the VSS wire going to the factory JBL amp is for the "ASL" feature on the factory headunit. This supposedly turns up the volume the faster you go to compensate for the ambient road and wind noise associated with the higher speeds.
I think you would be safe if you left it disconnected, especially if you turn off the ASL feature.
Dont take this for the truth though, just speculation.
Also, are you selling your factory JBL speakers? 3 of mine are blown, and I would like to drop back in some factory ones. Email me at dungut@gmail.com if you are. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply! The funny thing is that even though I had the "ASL" on, I never heard the difference in volume while driving, my wife's Xterra has the same feature and every time you stop or accelerate the volume goes down or up accordingly, I guess her car is noisier than my Camry, lol.
I am planning on splicing the wires for the new speakers from the connectors used for the amp located under the passenger seat, I figure it will be easier than messing with the harness at the back of the radio/nav unit. Besides it will be closer to the trunk where the new amps will be installed.
Sure I am willing to sell the speakers, btw they are in good condition! I will PM you to discuss price S/H.
I found a possible solution to the rear speaker hitting the trunk lid lift spring bars. A spacer to adapt the speakers and raise them up some, look at post 3 in this link; Aftermarket 6X9s on camry 09 [help needed]
This might give you some ideas.
Best to you...

Hello Luna,
Thank you so much for taking the time to find the information. That was exactly what I did to fix the problem, I built two brackes/spacers made out of MDF, I used one of the original JBL speakers as a template. I will upload some pictures as soon as I can.
